I need a tripod sturdy enough for Nikon f2.8 70-200 lens (with camera, of course) But, I also need lightweight due to some nerve problems. What would be the least expensive tripod that would meet my needs? I bought a 79SunPak at Best Buy and found it is to unsteady. I don't have a camera story in town to look at example and try them. Any suggestions? |

this one is made of carbon fiber, holds 13 pounds and weighs 6.7 pounds. dont know if thats still too heavy for you but it seems to be a nice tripod. wish i had one.

I'm far from being a tripod expert, but if you have a Walmart near by (I'm being serious) check them out there. I got their MX1000, which is more than good enough for my P+S. They also have an MX2000 model that was much sturdier, but I didn't want to spend the extra 10 bucks. The MX2000 is $29.99 I believe. It won't hurt to look! :) |

ditto to you Mary, I am in the same boat as you, in that I live in an isolated community and most often purchase without seeing. I am looking for that tripod that "one size fits all". It probably doesn't exist but I like to backpack, do mostly landscape/nature, but would like one that will work for me indoors (portraits etc). No problem with the price. Sorry for using your post, but it was the same topic. |

I'm really happy with my Velbon 347E, not too heavy, lives permanently strapped to the bottom of my backpack and is study.
I should be getting a 70-200 f/2.8 in a couple of weeks so I will be able to tell you first hand how it copes, but I really don't see it being an issue

With the 70-200 f/2.8 the lens mounts to the tripod... but with the Sunpak 7500 Pro there is play even with the lens mounted instead of the camera. Maybe I am doing something wrong... maybe there is something else I need to use... I had the sturdiest Wal-Mart Brand and it was not at all safe for the lens so I was hoping the Best Buy Tripod would work. It feels sturdier but there is still some play in it. I will check out the ones suggested. Thanks

I have the same lens, with my D70, My tripod is a Bogen Manfrotto, perfect weight, and holds my camera very well.

I bought a hama star 63 cheapo one for about £19.99-£25 here in UK. Quite surprising how good it is. Very solid indeed, comes with 2 spirit levels and goes about 1.5 metres I think (althought you can get bigger) Came with a carry bag too. Overall if you want a cheap one these are pretty good I think and it has all the usual adjustments.
Heres a picture of one (not fully extended)//www.mucphotos.de/Fotos/Hama_Star_63.jpg

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I ended up with a Bogen 3100 and a Kirk ball head. I am pleased. |
