I think Mirosoft have released one on their website but you have to be running SP2 to use it! I think it's called Raw Viewer or something like that! I have trouble with the PC when running SP2 so I haven't tried it out!

No problem! I just had all sorts of problems with SP2 so I ended up uninstalling it. I would love to have the Raw Viewer program cause I think it would be really handy but it's a shame they only made it SP2 compatible! |

Please let us know how it is nborton. I just don't know if I want to go through the hassle of installing SP2 again but having RAW thumbnails in Windows would be ultra handy whilst browsing folders. |

the windows raw works really well for me so far (only been installed a few hours). raws work just like jpgs now. i've been annoyed by not being able to see raw thumbs in the file folder for a long time, and now i finally can. so i'm happy. |

I had lots of conflicts with Norton Internet Security. They were really conflicting badly on my system for some reason. Never worked out why. I should try it again because it was when SP2 first came out and I have since updated Internet Security to the latest version so the problem may not appear again. I just got put off it. |

I actually saw the program mentioned on DPreview a few months back but I don't think Microsoft really made it that known that it was out! |

When I had the Rebel, I shot in raw + jpg and used the Canon EOS Viewer to extract the jpg embedded in the raw file. You can then view the jpg in xp. Extract and save in the same folder and same filename so it's placed beside the orig CRW and THM files. It doesn't change the CRW in anyway.
Note that the embedded jpg will take up more space on your CF card.

here is something that is really easy and has worked fabulously for viewing my 300D raw files as thumbs in the normal windows xp explorer:
copy the following text into a plain text (*.txt) document and save it on your hard drive. Next, change the extension to *.reg and double-click on the file -- this will import the text into your registry.
This reg edit will instruct explorer to treat *.thm files as jpgs, letting making them appear as thumbs in win xp explorer. You won't be able to view your raw files in full size, however.
let me know if this works for you.
Jan
Here is the text:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.thm]
@="Thumbnail"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.thm\ShellEx]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.thm\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{7376D660-C583-11D0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"

When I shoot RAW, I usually shoot a small jpg also. I didn't know there were viewers availble for Windows, I may have to give that a shot. |

Two ways to do this:
1) when in windows exporer, right click on the filename and select rename from the menu. Change txt to reg (after the dot)
2) open the file as if to edit and do a save as changing txt to reg

Or just right click, choose rename, and rename it. |

make sure your computer is set to show file extensions. If it isn't, open any folder and go to tools/folder options. Once there, go to the view tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Once that is done, just follow the previous instructions from MK and cpanaioti.
...and sorry for not responding earlier -- I have a HUGE exam tomorrow, so I try not to look at DPC all the time :) |

This is the easiest way I have found to view RAW files as thumbs on XP. I set the camera to RAW + sm JPG and the lowest resolution. The files appear side by side so that the RAW comes up next to the JPG thumb. The small JPG files take up very little room on the CF card and the hard drive.

With some cameras the jpg is embedded in the RAW file so that option is not available without first extracting it using the CANON software.

What cameras would that be?
This worked with the 300D and it works with the 1D Mark II. The 1Ds automatically displayed thumbs in RAW.
