I have been having a great time with the Duotone challenge and have been learning a great deal about what to look for in a subject and how to process for the best results. I really like some of my shots and will have a hard time choosing. It will probably be like the last couple of challenges for me - have choices, have a favorite, over think the problem, and submit one that doesn't do so well.
Oh, well, I still have tomorrow to mess it up.

Well, I didn't know much when I started, so what I learned is really fundamental.
- Light, shape and texture are the primary design elements available. I found myself looking more intently at these since color was removed.
- The tonal value of the colors is very important. Some subjects I thought would work great just laid there because the tonal values were too close. Where there was character with colors, when the colors were removed, thinds just didn't show up the way I had hoped.
- I shoot in RAW format and am using Adobe Camera Raw. I read an article that said to desaturate in Camera RAW and I did it that way - seemed to work.
- In choosing the duo colors I found such different effects with two dark shades versus a dark and a light shade. I actually like the effect of the two dark shades, but I don't think I would use it in a challenge - would get the dreaded "too dark" note.
- In duotone mode in PS7, I used the picker rather than the Pantones. By using the picker, you can get to the color and shade you want pretty quickly.
That's about all I can think of specifically.

Well, I did it again. Judging from the voting on the selection I submitted, it is really mediocre. Some of my many outtakes are in my portfoloio under "Duotones".

Just looked at your outakes, and they look really good. Especially the stairs. My duotone shot is doing mediocre too, but judging from your outakes I can't imagine your shot not doing well. |
