How can you tell if those nasty spots are dirt or dead pixels on the sensor? I am hesitant to try to clean anything for fear of just making it worse. Is there "special equipment" I need for cleaning a lens? I can't imagine windex and a kleenex are going to do my lens much good! Thanks

Dead pixels will usually...usually show up as a bright spot in any number of colours. Dust spots normally show up as dark spots and are more noticable at smaller apertures.

If you have a point and shoot type camera it's probably not sensor dust.

For lens cleaning I use lens cloth and Isopropyl Alcohol. Be sure that cloth is clean. Even oil from your skin may transfer to the cloth.

The easiest way to tell whether it is sensor dust or a stuck pixel is to take two pictures of a clear blue sky. Make sure that one of the pictures is in focus and one of the pictures out of focus. If the spec changes in size and it is dust. Also dust is normally dark as it covers the pixels whereas the pixels are usually near their maximum value of either red or green or blue.

I hope this helps you.

A stuck pixel will also only be about 1 pixel in size. It may slightly affect the pixels surrounding it. A dust speck should be noticably larger and affect a lot more than 1 pixel.

For lens cleaning Lenspens are simply amazing. Before I bought one I just thought it was all hype, but they do work very well.
