Hi, I'm new to photography and was wondering if you guys could give me any comments on these pics that recently took. Thanks in advance for any critiques, good or bad :)

Howdy Dave & welcome! :-)

#1: I like the unusual perspective here, but the highlights seem a bit strong. You might consider burning/dodging a bit to bring out some deeper, richer tones.
#2: Better focus than the first one and I like the pose better. I'd still consider some burning/dodging, but the fact that you can see the entire butterfly's wings is a plus.
#3: Good focus and I like the closer view (while still being able to see the whole butterfly). This is the best of the 5 in my opinion. Have you considered flipping this shot over? It might make it stronger (dunno - just a thought). The highlights are less of an issue here, but I still think they could all use a bump in that area.
#4: The fact that the wings are clipped is a distraction to me, and the highlights are pretty blown in this one. Great focus and textures on the butterfly's body and top wing areas - it trails off after that though a little more than it should IMHO.
#5: I think this is my least favorite of the bunch. The highlights are pretty blown out and I think the crop is too tight.

Overall though, it looks like you have a good eye and you're obviously getting some good shots. I also think that with a little more skilled processing, you'll find that you can really make some of them pop.

Hope this helps. Remember though - it's just my 2 cents. What you think is what really matters. :-)

Keep on shooting!

Thanks SJ, for the helpful advice! I really appreciate that you took the time to take a look at my pics and help me out a bit. I knew there was something I couldn't put my finger on that was hindering the photos a bit and I'm glad that someone was able to help me out. I guess it's also a wise choice for me to get better acquainted with Photoshop!

not bad for being new to photography! i like the ones better where the butterfly is on top, on the first few i had to do a double take to see what was on the flower. my favorite is the 3rd one down. Very nice!

I prefer #3. This is a difficult shooting situation. It looks like you are getting your exposure reading off the black butterfly which it is trying to turn grey- that is causing the plants in the background to be over exposed. If you have editing software, you may try reducing the overall brightness along with darkening highlights a bit. You did a good job on the focus. Taking a reading off the plants may have worked better. Shooting close at a moving subject is hard too. A good first effort and you will just get better with more practice. With time you will learn what works best with your camers in various situations. I am still learing lots about mine- I have had it for about nine months.
