faidoi.....perhaps you can answer a question for me.....I know that the *ist is an SLR...but from all the pics/ads I've seen, it looks as though the lens is integrated. Or am I just crazy and looking at the wrong pics/stats? Just trying to figure out if it basically comes with a kit lens or what. Thanks! |

It's a full dSLR that usually comes with a kit lens. It uses Pentax' full line of K, KA, KAF, KAF2 and m42 screw mount (with an adaptor) lenses, among others.. plus most of Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Phoenix, et al. lenses in Pentax mounts. |

The *ist DS, *ist DL, and the *ist DS2 can be purchased with a kit lens or body only. Just like the Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sigma, Fujifilm, dSLRs you can take off the lens/lense and put on another one.
The cool part is most of the older lenses will work with the camera. So there are probably 100's of lense that will work manually. |

The same sensor as the Nikon D70 also. So think about it has a D70 that uses AA batteries, SD card, can fit 100's of older lenses, smaller, and lighter.

lol. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm not the only one that uses it well, I've seen some great work from you.. samtrundle is amazing with it.. pug8 gets some awesome macros.. puzzled was doing some wonderful work until he *cough* turned traitor with the 20D (just kidding puzz! 20D is a fine cam).
Lots of people making the Ds proud.. (not too many users with the DL yet, but can't wait to see work from it too)

Ok, thanks!!! I knew about the sensor being the same...which is fabulous in my opinion. But there's one more thing I'm curious about....
How many minutes do you get out of those 4 AA batteries that run the camera? For instance, when my Sony is fully charged, it says I have 174 minutes (which of course is slightly more than actual if I have the LCD screen running all the time). Because the rest of this camera sounds amazing, but I don't want to have to change 4 batteries every 30 minutes :-(
So if anyone has any experience with that, I'd love to hear what kinda life you usually get out of your batteries.
And then, if you have any advice on getting $600 out of your spouse.... ;-) |

I don't think you can put it in terms of minutes.. really.. but in terms of number of shots. I get between 650 and 1200.. that's right, 1200.. shots on a charge of four 2500mAh energizer NIMHs. It all depends on if I use a lot of AF, or on-board flash (a rare thing now that I have a couple of externals), or if I'm reviewing a lot on the LCD. The camera is very, very good with power consumption.
If you need a time period though.. I've had one set of batteries in my camera for 2 days of almost constant shooting.

I've taken almost 2, 1gb cards and didn't have to change the batteries. I have the camera set to sleep if it's not active for 1 minute so that may help with power conservation. |

Wow!! Thanks for the fast replies!!!! Holy cow! It's so nice to have somewhere to turn to for these things :-) :-) :-)
Well.....there may be another Pentax owner in the near future....
Is there anything about your camera (if you have a Pentax) that you don't like? Or that you would change? |

A lot of things I would change.. bigger LCD, more FPS, better marketing from the company, more Megapixels.. but man, no matter what you have, one always wants more, you know?
Anything I don't like? Umm.. no.. not really. This truly is one fine.. fine camera. |

Agree with Glen on the improvements, but what it has outweighs IMHO the improvements it needs.

Unfortunately, when I followed the link at Sam's Club, I couldn't find the Pentax camera. Even using their search, I came up empty. |
