Just out of curiosity, why do most member challenges have advanced editing and open challenges have basic editing? I mean i understand the different editing rules call for different art, but i guess I'd like to see some member challenges with basic editing... there are some member challenges i would enter if they were basic editing because with advanced editing i know people will really play with their images and im not big on advanced editing, or maybe its just that my photoshop skills arent up to it lol ;-)

I have to say: O_o
You do know that advanced editing you don't have to use advance editing, you can just post the picture as you want it?
And member challenges have advanced editing because well paying would be quite useless for members (Aside from portfolios that is). Advance editing is a benefit that comes from being a paid member, there's more freedom to it than open challenges.

I dunno, i have to disagree, i think being a paid member would still be worth it if member challenges were basic editing. I know I dont have to use advanced editing in an advanced editing challenge, but if you think about it, those that will use it will probably come up with better photos... so it would be almost a handicap not to use it... I mean sure there are lots of merits to using advanced editing, but sometimes i feel like the photo can lose its natural magic that way....

as a member, you're still welcome to enter the open challenges with basic editing. |

rednit _ i think you answered your own question when you said that it is almost a handicap.
think of it this way, most people who find the site play a couple of times before they hand over their dosh for membership. The newbies if you will, may not only be new to the site, but new to photography also. And in turn new to post processing.
By having the open challenges basic, it levels (part of) the playing field. No one can fix thier booboos in basic if they notice them (as an experienced photog/PP-er would, often found muttering in thier comment box "i wish i could spot edit") or if they are still so new to PP that they havent even realised what a clone brush did (i didnt a few months ago haha).
After a few weeks if the user likes the site, they are aware that by becoming a paid member they are moving into challenges with other people that are paying - which in most cases mean they have some level of seriousness about thier work (in most cases). the user has decided to more up in weight catagory and knows that a guy naturally at that weight catoagory might pack a harder punch until the user gets used to fighting at that level. |

Membership has its privileges, which is why most member challenges give you more freedom to polish your entry. Advanced Editing doesn't automatically mean better entries, though. Several of my highest scores have come in Open challenges, and some of my member entries either were (or might as well have been) Basic Editing.
Either editing ruleset is merely a way to add finishing touches to your capture. Usually, most of your score will be determined at the click of the shutter button.

*nods* I guess what you guys are saying makes sense, i am relatively new to the site, joined because of my brother, but i'm discovering this is a really neat community and definitely a crowd of some excellent photographers, some of the photos on here are quite breathtaking....

To be honest this is probably the biggest reason I have not changed from "Registered" to member. I found the site a few months ago after changing from film to digital (in SLR terms), so am fairly new to digital.
Personally; I am a long way from coming to terms with the amount of post-processing possible in the digital workflow and how I feel about this (I know it also happened in the darkroom, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying zero pp). I just find sometimes let down by the final -stunning- image when I see the source -good/great but not stunning- image from the advanced editing challenges. I guess I am strugelling with photographic skill vs. Editing skill and the advanced challenges really need both. |

Equally stunning changes are possible, and even common, within the basic editing workflow. Major color shifts, major contrast changes, you name it.
