Actually, the challenge was to photograph your interpretation of pride, not what you were proud of. There is more than one meaning of pride. Feeling a sense of worth or accomplishment is one (the one most people chose to photograph,) and another is hautiness, arrogance or self-importance (which only has one or two photographs.)

Sometimes it bites to see things differently.

Who knows until after it is all over.

Honestly, as an artist, there were many pictures here that spoke strongly about pride.

It reminds me of a thread on here where some tourists from the US came to Canada on Canada day, and did not even know it, plus admitted in there way a kind of foolishness about not knowing, considering they were right next to us as a nation.

The strength of those pictures, that are America, are in the heart not the mind. I gave those a five. Not because I do not appreciate the ferver that is America, but to become greater then yourself, you must reach beyond. that makes you truely a 10.

In my honest opinion.(IMHO)

I know, you are in Australia.... Almost worse in pride then the US... :-)

Spell check, :P

this is pathetic..... some people are not getting it, when i thought it was pretty obvious. (atleast more obvious that 80% of the other entries.)

Is my entry really that bad or is it just the fact that it suggests something that really isn't so.
Most of you people already know which entry is mine.

This is kind of discouraging seeing as how I think I have one of the pictures that stands out against the usual my kid, my country, my animal, my whatever, but then usually so does everyone else. I never expected a ribbon, but I figure it should be top 10 at least, even for the stand out reason alone, and it looks like its not going to happen. Regardless, this is my first entry, I happened to shoot it before I knew of the challenge theme so no extra work just for it, and I have followed the boards for quite some time, always coming across people unhappy with their entry scores, so I guess its just time to add myself to the mix :) Good luck everyone.

Well now, at first my American "Fervor" was mildly offended ;-). Actually though, I agree! A photo of a flag or symbol or landmark of any nation only appeals to the national pride of those citizens, and then not all of them.

I'm wondering why we need to label our photos in challenges in the first place (I do as well). I think that a photo should speak for itself as to it's relevance to the challenge topic. I mean, if you have to create a label to get people to understand your meaning, haven't you failed to convey it in the photo itself.

Just one guy's opinion.

The photo is supposed to be taken during the challenge dates.

While many photos speak for themselves, titles or labels can help some people understand why they photographed something. Such as in the "Pride" challenge it was important to title photos that aren't a person's first thought of a word. For pride, most people's first thought is usually country pride or pride in their child or pet. So if the photo is something such as a cake that you baked and decorated and are proud of, that would fall into the "Pride" challenge for me if they titled it "My first cake" or something like that. Had there been no title or just titled "Cake" I would not understand why or how it fit the challenge.

Pride can also mean arrogance; hautiness; self-importance.

Shall I join the previous scream of "Come on people, open your minds," or just ride it out? Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Not knowing which picture you are talking about, it could just mean that you didn't successfully capture arrogance, hautiness, or self-importance either.

You're right. Or, it could me my title didn't clue people in to the meaning I was going for. Either way, I learn. Strong images do not necessarily work for the challenge in which they were placed, nor does a more subtle connection. However, I have found it takes a bit of time to get past the frustration of fantasy (what I thought it would do) to reality (what is really does.) By the way, I chose not to scream. ;-)
Why sooooooo many American Flags!!! (And a few pumpkins too)

American Flags may invoke pride for Americans but not me, that could be a reason people with good flag shots are getting lower than their expectations. I think there are a few (and only a few) great shots here, I've just finished voting on all the Pics. I'll fine tune them later
Before I start the term "you" here is used in general and not necessarly the above quoted person, to everyone it applies to, you know who you are.

The fact that an American Flag invokes pride in someone is reason enough to vote that image on it's quality and not it's subject. It has met the challenge, if you don't like the subject you can just click the little arrows and continue on, if you feel you have to vote on every single image than you should at least give it a 5 for meeting the challenge details. This site has members from all over the world, there is NO possible way anyone here can shoot an image that pleases or "invokes pride in" everyone. Maybe it's what that flag stands for, the sacrifices, etc not the flag itself.

I thought we were here to share images and knowledge but how can someone learn when you're just gonna look at an image you don't agree with and pass it by. Look at the lighting, the sharpness, the colors, the DOF, tell them how they could have maybe done it better, and maybe even state that you weren't comfortable with the subject matter but you were adult enough to look past that and help them anyway.

It was still taken within the challenge dates, I just happened to shoot it over the weekend and didn't notice the challenge until I got home.

Very happy with comments, but I'm getting a lot of 3 and 4 that the picture IMHO doesn't deserve. Sometimes some pictures surprise me for going higher than expected. This case is the opposite :-(

I'm also getting lots of great comments. I'm happy with my score in general. Not great, but it should get into my top shots on my profile. I always love knocing another one off.

I'm still at a 5.6, and only have 4 comments. They're nice and all, but right now I'd kinda like one that was on the really critical end so I can see why some people didn't like it so much. SSDD.

You can always ask for comments in the individual photo forum after. Though I know its nice to get them during the challenge.
