Mocabela, thank you soo much for your in-depth critique of my entry in this challenge. I think you nailed it perfectly.
That being said, I'm sitting at 4.2955. |

I just want to make a quick point about lack of comments. My wide angle shot received a 5.6 and ONE comment. Does that mean the shot sucked? Absolutely not. To me, it means that it was (literally)unremarkable. Sure, an abundance of comments gives you a message about your photo, but so does a LACK of comments. Have you ever noticed that the shots that collect the most comments are the ones at the top and bottom of the continuum? The ones around the lower middle are sometimes not good enough OR bad enough to inspire someone to give feedback. For those of you who end up with little or no comments at the end of a challenge, put some thought into why folks did not feel compelled to comment on your shot. Hopefully, it will help you create photos that stand out and make your peers take notice.

Ooh, I'm really annoyed with myself. I was going through the shots I took at higher ISO levels intending to use one of them for this challenge, and I found one that I overlooked that's WAY better than my entry with almost no editing. Bah! :P |

Hey, you're welcome :) I'm not sure which one's yours (I do have an idea of which one it may be, though, and if so I gave you a 5 or a 6), but I'm glad I could help :) |

I do have a grainy shot at high iso and the flash didn't fire as it wasn't charged in time so I had to push the levels/curves which added more noise, here it is

Awesome contrast - I think the grain looks fabulous on that shot. |

I didn't give out too many 5s though, so we'll see :P I rated this challenge fairly high because of personal preference for grain. |

Sheesh, it's just one challenge among many. All year long people with P&S cameras get hammered for "noise". DPC is a culture that absolutely abhors noise, collectively. Even though sometimes it can be integral to an image and effective. So here's ONE challenge where the P&S people don't have to worry about noise, and suddenly we are a "travesty"? I'm hoping you meant that jokingly, as possibly indicated by your "lol", but I can't be sure.
Personally I thought it was kinda fun, seeing as how I have finally got my 20D and its zero-noise ability, and suddenly I had to try to subvert that...
You know, I was just in B of A this morning doing some business, and I was looking at their big promotional posters, and I noticed that ALL of them, all different pictures, are using film grain in a very noticeable way. Their agency clearly made a decision to go in that direction, for whatever reason. So it's not like this challenge has no application in the real world. And there are some very nice noisy images entered.
Unfortunately, mine isn't one of them :-(
Robt.

I think it is a great challenge although my picture has bombed, it is revelation to me........ I see my pictures in far different light then most of the voters here. I absolutely love the image I entered in this challenge and think it is the best image I have entered here even better then my ribbon winning shots which are just for the mass appeal.
What I have realised is this image has soul and from now on I will concentrate on more images that appeal to me not DPC voters.

This challenge was the first time I used ISO 1600 for anything and with the 300D there is noticable noise at this setting. At the same time the increased shutter made the images tack sharp. So I consider this exercise one of learning; up until now I didn't realize to what degree my images were actually suffering from camera shake. I always chaulked it up to poor quality lenses since I always try to follow the 1/focal length rule.
In anycase, my image may be noisy and sharp at the same time but it is also bombing:

No offense taken. You say that your grain is "tasteful". Is it possible that you did this so tastefully that the grain does not enhance the image? That's the key to this challenge. Anyone can take a shot and slap grain/noise on it. Doing it in a way that makes the grain an integral part of the shot takes work.
Like many here I learned to shoot using black and white film. I did my own developing and learned when it was a good idea to use higher speed film for effect, not just for the ability to shoot in lower light.
Grain can emphasize feelings of motion. It can evoke memories of dark, foggy streets in Europe. It can remind you of a Gothic novel, or old horror movie. It's also very evocative of times past.
So ask yourself this, did the grain you tastefully added to the shot enhance the mood? Does it add to the story being told? Or does it just allow you to meet the challenge?
Remember that we learn most from things that are hard. This wasn't supposed to be an easy challenge. It was designed to make you think a bit. :)

Getting hopes dashed on the rocks of reality again: Priceless
Not a single comment! I do find it interesting that for a challenge called "Film Grain" any instance you see on any photo is a result of either digital noise or Photoshop filters - or both. I just find it eyeronik. :-) |

Blemt, i fully agree with your point of view, some how i have the feeling, maybe by the amount of pict submitted which do not share this perspective, that not many people are judging on that

Ok...it is very possible that I gave the 1 to any individual. As I said in an earlier post to this thread it is the lowest scoring challenge I have voted to date. However, EVERY image I gave a 1 to also got a comment except for two or three and those will get one today or before the end of the challenge for sure. The first comment I left was simply "Where is the image grain?" and then later that was expanded.
Before this challenge my average score given was 5.8xx and this challenge lowered that for sure. Breakdown (and this will change as I review and bump during the week and bumps will be up not down):
10 - 2
9 - 4
8 - 30
7 - 30
6 - 74
5 - 75
4 - 2
3 - 27
2 - 0
1 - 31
I viewed all images on two different monitors (both calibrated) and at 2 different resolutions. If you got a 1 from me, it is because I did not see any grain OR you were selective in application of your grain (grain affects the whole image, not just part of it).
And on the other side of that, at least one of the photos I scored low I also selected as a favorite. It is a great image, just not for this challenge.
These types of arguments always come up during a challenge since no one is as fond of your image as you are and you can never understand why someone doesn't see what you see. Instead of whining about it, learn from it. As much as you may disagree with any individual vote, the collective can't be wrong. And if you think they are, why is it that you are right and EVERYONE else is wrong? This alone should make you think before you post a reaction to a single vote or category of votes.

im not complaining at all, as i think my photo is probably sitting where the majority think, but if you are the baghead that gave me the one and asked 'Where's the Grain' then you really need your eyes looked at, it's quite visible, just not 'in your face',.

To Roadrunner: As I said I looked at every image at at least two different resolutions (some more) and on two different calibrated monitors. Yes, I am a bag head. But if I gave you a one you got a comment and sorry, if I did give a one, I didn't see any grain or your grain was selective. And seeing how the grain was to be an integral part of the image, in your face would have been better.
To Qart: Nope, I gave 31 1's. As I said this was the lowest scoring challenge I have voted on yet. With an average vote of 5.8 going into this challenge I would think it is obvious it is not my normal routine to vote low. I usually am pretty generous with my scores and usually vote on a 4 to 10 scale reserving the lower three for the ones I feel just don't meet the challenge.
