How about a challenge with no digital editing allowed. Pictures must come straight from the camera...only thing allowed is for resize.

I think this would be really interesting...

I had thought about this too, but there is a problem and that is RAW. Not everybody has access to this and it would give a huge advantage since most basic editing can be done in RAW anyway.

I don't think it would be interesting at all. The editing part is part of photography too, it's the photographer's vision. Witouth any editing (Including simple croping or grain), the picture is just copying nature.

I'm just rambling...

Let's ask some of those with the Canon Mark II and stuff. I believe it underexposes those shot because it assumes you will edit it later. I personally don't care for a straight out of camera challenge. But if there is one I just won't participate.

I agree. Why limit ourselves? I say we have a contest were you can do any editing you want.

Photography has never been truly straight from the camera. Shooting slides would come the closest. Any other medium requires post processing either by a lab or by you in a darkroom, bet it chemicals or digital.

All straight from the camera means in terms of digital is having the camera set to jpeg and setting the processing parameters in camera. Processing algorithms in computer software are far more sophisticated than the ones in camera.

Just my 2 cents.

you point and shooters would be at a great disadvantage. If I shoot RAW, and then convert it to JPEG, I have great control over what the image would look like. I can do much of what I would do in photoshop in my Raw editing program. And my EXIF would say basically that it is "straight from the camera" Otherwise, if we didn't allow this, the raw pictures look REALLY GROSS until some saturation and contrast is added.

This has been discussed countless times before, i suggest you search the forums - it'll tell you more reasons than you can shake a stick at as to why this is a silly idea.

Just a few of mine though - point and shoot cameras do a lot of editing "in-camera", sharpening, saturation adjustment... hell, some even allow you to crop the image. In comparison, dslr's expect a postprocessing workflow.

Besides, where would you draw the line? You'd have to at least allow resizing to 640... would you be allowed to change colour profile then, etc? How about sharpening to get back the detail you lose by resizing?

So yeah, it's a silly idea :)

We ran this challenge once too. Im too lazy to look it up, but it's been done and I remember it being slightly frustrating.

I think that this would be interesting.....It would give us a chance to be creative with nature on her terms :).
I also say that it would be interesting to have a challenge where you can edit all you want.
