I'm sure ana ctive Nikonian will comment to this soon. Nikon speedlights are certainly a good choice, but I'm not familiar with the various models to advise you. Canon I know :-)

Both the SB-600 and SB-800 are great flash unit and work with iTTL on the D-70. The difference is that the SB-800 is a bit stronger (more range) and can act as the Master for multiple other SB-600's or 800's. The SB-600 is less expensive and can act as a remote using the D-70's onboard flash as the Master. I have the SB-800 but have found it is probably overkill.

Hope this helps.

i got the 600 and love it. use it all the time in wireless mode. i would love to get a second, this time an 800, most likely...

if you do a lot of macro work, check out the new wireless ring flash system nikon's just come out with. another of my major wants these days...

I've been thrilled with my SB-800. I never realized how inadequate my old flash was until I got this one. It really is a great flash. A little pricey, but I honestly feel it was worth it.

QUESTION My wonderful father just got me an SB-600 ... Always spoiling me!!!

I started to read and thought "COOL! Now I can use the flash for high-speed shutter stuff ... WAIT ... NOT on the D70!" ...

Apparently the D80 is even slower in the Flash-sync category. I would really like to use it at 1/4000 of a second or so ...

Do I need a D200?

You shouldn't have to, there should be a way to set it into high speed sync mode. The only catch for this is that you lose a lot of flash power. I know my Sigma EF500 DG Super does this just fine (this flash is also an alternative to the Nikon Speedlites that you can look into).

I have one 800 and two 600s. I use the 800 on my D70 to control the 600s. If I had a D200, I'd go totally with 600s because the commander mode is built in - and I'd save a lot of money in the long run.

As far as the sync speed, it's my understanding to shoot that fast you need a D200 or a D2X.

In the Nikon video "The Speed of Light" he mentions that to freeze the cheerleaders in the air with the speedlights he had to use the D2X's high speed sync mode.

I finally called several dealers and the D70 just doesn't have it.

So I'm off to buy my D200 now - :-)
