I have a question for you all... is getting a 6 usually considered a:
1) Good challenge
2) Almost, damn!
3) If it were not for those bastards voting 1
4) OMG, this is much more than I ever expected
5) Are the others really that bad?
6) What were the voters thinking?
7) I thought this was going for a 7!
I would like to know something more about DPC Psychology.
Also there could be more options. |

to me 6 means a strong, technically sound image, probably missing that wow factor that would make it a 7+

On a scale from 1 to 10 it's a little above the average, which is 5.5.
As a final score in a challenge it's pretty high for most, average for some, and low for very few. I guess it all depends on who gets the 6.

It mostly depends on the photo and challnge; it's subjective. I'd say a combination all those; I think a final score of 6 or above is very good. |

Personally, I consider a score of 6 or above to be a success. I'm usually in the 5's and always feel I could have done better. Last challenge was was in the fours and very chagrined! |

I'm certainly happy finishing with a six.
Take a look at peoples average vote cast.
They are usually pretty low.
I was certainly surprised when I saw how low mine was.
So, I think a six is a perfectly respectable, hold your head high score!!!!!!!

Getting closer, but never hit a 6 yet... Let me get back to ya on that one.
Well, my industrial was up to near 7 at 50 or so votes and I thought WOW, I might ribbon with this... and I was like OMG, I can't believe it. Then reality hit and it sank and sank... and ofcourse I blamed the voters, but in the end it's all really my fault.

Six is above the average and a good score here. But what really matters is what percentile you are. Different challenges have different overall averages. So to normalize your progress, just look at the percentile rank. If you are over 50th percentile, you have scored better than half of the other contestants.
If your percentile rank seems low, then look at whether or not you get some favorites on the image either before or after the challenge. If you get some favorites, that means your image is "touching" people or at least pleasing them. And IMHO, that's what all art is about!

I started out hating 4's...still do and now I hate 5's though they aren't too bad.
6+ is a great zone to steadily be in, unless you enter every Challenge and get addicted to the update button, the 6's can be tough to maintain. There are some people...like me that enter sub par stuff just to be involved. |

I've started monitoring my ... Avg Vote Received: 5.5226. In fact I have become obsessive about it!
Every time I look at an image and am not happy about it, I get this cold ice feeling that if it scores below 5, my average will drop below 5.5 and then I will be a "below average photographer". I made that mistake in Industrial, never again.
Tell you what, it certainly focusses the mind and steels the determination :)

ME TOO! I am just over the 5.5 and should keep that position after my current 4.5 and 5.7 scoring pics in the pipeline. The fact that my next entry will be my 100th makes me think and rethink if and what I will enter. I am absolutely focussed to end my century on an over 5.5 score.. The current enrties are truely not doing well and I am holding thumbs the century will be better received.....;-)

gibun you should not worry about keeping a 5.5 average, you have "the eccentric"

To you question I think for me it is #1.
My avg is 5.29ish and going into each challenge my goal is a 6 or better pushing the envelope often to try to achieve. If I don't score in the 6 range then as long as im above my average I'm ok with it.

I think that getting a 6 score is great. I always hope to get a 6 result with every challenge. Doesn't always happen. It is hard to please everybody. But then sometimes when I see the results and I look at the scores I have rec. after a challenge...even if the avg score was low...it makes me smile if I rec a only a few votes in the 7-10 range. I am happy that some people thought it was great. It is even better when you get a favorite! I am trying to not enter a challenge to just enter...I am now trying to wait for the ones that inspire me to hopefully bring up my avg votes rec. (5.4) would like to see that a 6 one day. |
