I am looking for suggestions for a GOOD photo quality ink jet printer in the $400 to $500 range. I have a Canon i960 that I thought was good until the yellow heads went out. I have tried several suggestions on cleaning the heads, but no luck and replacement heads are as much as the printer cost. I would like a printer that will do 13x17 prints. Also has anyone ever tried using an exterior ink supply system and what were the results. Thanks in advance. |

I've been using the Epson R1800 for about four months now. I've replaced every color at least five times. I'm very happy with the printer in every regard. I've used several different types of paper but by far the best is the Kodak Professional LUSTRE. The 13x19 are just perfect with it and they don't scratch as easy as many of the other high gloss papers. can't go wrong with this printer.

I've got the Canon i9900, and love it. It's whisper quiet and produces stunning prints. I tried some crappy paper in it at first and got crappy results. Made the switch to Canon paper, and it's been smooth sailing ever since. |

I have had a Canon MP F30 for several years and with good paper, it makes wonderful prints. But for travel (off-site) purposes, last weekend I pucked up an HP Photosmart 335. Its tiny and adorable, but ONLY prints 4X6s (archivable quality). |

I have had the Epson 2200 (I'm not sure what replaced it if anything)for about 3 years and can't say anything but good things about it. I love the fact you can use sheets or roll paper. It makes awesome prints. I have never tried using anything but Epson ink so I am not sure the difference there.
Bottom line is I don't think you can go wrong with Epson. |

With whatever printer you get, thinks to keep in mind.
Four things effect your printing
- Printer
- Software (Specific settings for that specific paper, note: manufactures assume you are using their specific brands) Also what your settings on print are (ie all your special little settings like boarderless etc...))
- Paper (it makes a huge difference, I had a big problem yesterday because I was trying to print photographs on both sides, had to switch types of paper to get even half way decent results.)
- Ink (If you are looking at an external ink system, you are using third party inks. These can be a great trade for $$$ versus quality, but be warned sometimes on some papers results will be unexpected.)
