Dang! Wish I read this post earlier - I got Vikas a sweater. ;-)

Vikas - you're single - spend it while you can. :) You aren't going to regret the purchase.

Many excellent rationales re: buying a DSLR. I especially like the suggestion to dump old gear on EBay. Having said all of that, the real question to ask yourself is: "Will I use all the advanced tech striving to become a serious hobbiest or pro or will I be using the new gear as simply another P & S? You know after second thought, if you have the cash make the dash!! As in high tail it to the store and buy the darn thing. Life's too short!!

Dont dither, if you can afford it do it. You will be amazed at the difference between a P&S and a DSLR, It opens up a whole new world.

I went throught the process at a time when I could justtify a dSLR so I started doing my homework. I decided not to buy a dSLR but instead the Panasonic FZ20.

I have still not regretted that decision. One of the biggest reasons is that the more I read and see what others have and can do, I still have the best glass of any of them and some are having to spend thousands on just one lens that still won't do what I can in low light and/or long telephoto.

The rationale of my choice is in detail on my profile page

Next question for everyone

I will get my camera in few days. What should I look(test) for to make sure everything is fine with the camera?

EDIT :
For those who missed my earlier post, I bought a D50 with 18-55mm and Tamron 70-300mm lenses. Can't wait for the mailman to knock on my door !!
