Let me preface this by saying I am the amateur of all amateurs. I own a Minolta Maxxum and a Kodak digital camera - and use the automatic features on both. I know nothing about apertures or f-stops or whatever. Okay, confession made, now my question(s).
I'm interested in taking "portrait like" photo's of my son. I keep getting really harsh shadows and poor color though. I tried moving the backdrop back until it's at least 6 feet behind him, but I still get a shadow. I'm pretty sure I need some additional lighting, but I'm at a loss as to where to proceed from there. My Minolta does have a hot shoe (yep, figured out what that was finally), but I would like to get something I could use with both my SLR and my digital. I keept reading about slaves, wireless, soft boxes and bounce flashes, but I have no idea what each is, what will work for me, and what I even need to look for. Can someone point me in the right direction? Oh, and I should say that I'm not looking to spend a ton of money here! Thanks for your help!
