I have been voting and so far I only gave out one score below a five. Signs may not be the most interesting subject to photograph, but come on people. This is insane.

too early to tell, but not bad considering the photo is not about a sign (as in road sign) but a sign as in symbol. i expect more than a few people to give 1s or 2s just because they don't understand the photo though.
what is the rule in voting? do you have to vote low if you think the photo does not meet the rules? or do you vote on the execution per se and let the judges weed out the violators?

Wow! You just made an extraordinarily complicated question out of 3 or more issues!
Q. what is the rule in voting?
A. vote as if the image follows the rules
Q. do you have to vote low if you think....
A. no, and you shouldn't!!!!
Q. the "judges"
A. there is a voluntary bunch of people at DPC who look at photos that might not meet the "rules" BUT...you must bring it to their attention by clicking on "Recommend this photo for disqualification" and typing in your reason why. There is a nice little pop-up window that will remind you that you are a peon when it comes to post-processing and you should in no way assume that the photo you just thought was illegal is actually illegal and you definitely, under all circumstances should vote as if you are the idiot and the photo is perfectly fine---if you do not do this, pixies will visit you abode when you are asleep and trash your memory cards and hard-drive, they will smudge your lenses and discharge your batteries, they will set everything to manual and laugh when you go to take that special picture at the perfect moment. So don't mess with assumptions! Just politely place your request, proceed as if everything is normal, sit back and be amazed at what your new community can do with a little pixie dust and basic editing. =)

yay. this is what i do. but there are some (or a lot, i don't know) who don't do this (i read in some forum somewhere that people start giving 1s when they see something that is a bit off the rules.)

...also though, keep in mind- not meeting the challenge theme is NOT a rule violation, so don't request a validation because it doesn't fit the challenge. That is where the voters come into play, and meeting the challenge should be taken into consideration when voting. Exactly how you consider that factor into your voting system is a whole 'nother can of worms :-) |

Do not take lightly these words I wrote! Really! When I was "new" here I saw a photo of an old rusty car in a field...nothing had color except the car...basic editing, so I couldn't figure out how this was done. Today? I could run circles around that image! But back then? I recommended for DQ and voted it a 3--pixies ate my hard-drive cracked the knuckle of my photo-taking finger. =)
