Look at what the web site said...

"The Outdoor Life âTAKE YOUR BEST SHOTâ Photo Contest is open to amateur photographers who are legal residents of the 50 United States, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and Canada (excluding Quebec)."

I hate to seem "US centric" but I don't know why Quebec would be excluded. Can one of my numerous northern friends care to enlighten me?

Also remember win - lose - or draw the photo you submit belongs to them to use anyway they see fit. You have just gave them one of your best pics for free. Now if you win then your name is in print, lose and they still get to use your pic for whatever. Most contests are just like that, it is a great way to be recognized but also a way for them to get free royalty free photos.

I may be wrong, but I do believe that one cannot participate in any contest, game and similar undertaking where monetary prizes are awarded, unless such activities are sponsored or officially recognized by the provincial government.

If I have time tomorrow, I will endeavour to make inquiries in this regard.

yes, Brent and Ray are both correct. It is indeed a Quebec law that prevents such contests there.

Also Brent is right, see this quote from the rules of this particular contest:

All entries become the property of Outdoor Life and may be used in the future at its sole discretion

If you are ok with giving away your work....go ahead and enter.

We must all remember to ALWAYS read the fine print.

The contest rules state: "open to amateur photographers". Amateurs who are used to being paid for their photographs are called professionals. There are other contests open to those.

So what is the definition of amateur? We cannot decide on the definition of professional, can we decide on amateur?

Well you are indeed known at "Prof" Fate not Mr Fate, or Sir Fate, or Hey You Fate ... so you indeed must be the professional everyone else needs to strive to be ;)

I think the general rule for "professional" is you ARE one if half your income or more comes from your "hobby".

Which.....considering that I work very part time right now....I could almost say! hahahaha.

But, that's the general rule I've heard.
