I am having trouble with portraits, and am trying to decide if it's me or the camera. Prolly me.
I know it's all about depth of view and generally speaking lowering the f/stop will create the blurred background effect, but it doesn't seem to be working for me. I shoot a Kodak Z740, and even in portrait mode I don't get the indistinct background I am looking for. It is somewhat blurred, but not like I want. I go to manual mode, drop the f/stop as low as possible, in this case, 2.8 and have played with the shutter speed. Still can't get it. What am I doing wrong?

You're doing (or seem to be doing) things right. You need to keep in mind that P&S cameras do not have the distinctive shallow DoF capability of the dSLR's.
Here's a few pointers though:
Move farther way from your subject and use as much zoom as possible (longer lens lenghts = shallower DoF)
Move the subject further away from the background.
Those two should help.
If all else fails --- blur the background in Photoshop ;-)

Ok, that all makes sense. But I tried to follow the tutorial, but I guess our versions of PS are different. I don't have some of the options talked about. Do you know of anywhere else?
