Take a look at TIME's Best of 2005 and vote for your favorite:

//www.time.com/time/yip/2005/

What might have been intereting (if it were possible) is if these images had been included in the recent Best of 2005 challenge here. I wonder how they would do?

I liked many of the images... but thought some were powerful images only after reading the caption. Anyway, food for thought.

Those photographs are vivid, real and sad. 99% of the photographs if not all, were negative, disaster/crisis/tragedy related. That is what is wrong with today's culture and media. If someone just new to Earth came and looked thru those photographs and said, "These are what you consider your world's best photographs?", I would be saddend for the world. So although moving and poignant, I am utterly disappointed in the outlook these photographs present. The world is a wonderul place, full of wonderful people and occassions, but too often all of us focus on negative. Thanks for sharing dwterry.

I'm not surprised to see "Heading Home" leading with votes, that image is powerful on so many different levels.

I thought just about all the images were extremely powerful, and I didn't read one caption the first time through...a haunting look at the world...I don't think there is any real comparison to be made between these pictures (which all tell a story) and the DPC challenge, which is mostly about pretty images...they simply don't invite comparison as their respective purposes are so vastly different..

That one has 21% of the vote, and is leading by 8% over the competition.

Amazing to me that there was only one happy picture in the bunch. Guess the best we have this year is death, war, and destruction? Hmmm....

There was another thread about this a while back. I'm trying to find it.

Found it: Time Magazine's Best Photos of 2005

In that thread I said of the Heading Home shot - "That is a very dramatic shot but if you look carefully you'll notice that a major part of it's impact comes from a deception. The Marines and coffin are still inside the body of the plane and out of the view of the passengers whose faces we see in the windows. Deception was probably not the photographer's intent at the moment he took the picture but it clearly was fostered by the caption writer.
"Heading Home
On arrival in Reno, Nev., as passengers on this civilian flight
looked on, Marines draped the flag over the coffin .... "
".

It's interesting to note that amongst all these 24 depictions of death, destruction & despair covering vast areas of the earth, the head-and-shoulders leader as "best of 2005" is a shot of an American soldier's flag-draped coffin. I find this vaguely disturbing.

Yes, I noticed that immediately; they can't possibly be looking at the coffin. And if they WERE, they're a pretty unmoved group, aren't they?

We'll I'm guessing that something on the tarmac has captured their attention but it's not the flag-drapped coffin. Yes, I find it disturbing in lots of ways.

Probably a color guard waiting for the coffin to be offloaded...

Burial Ground, The Last Stand and A Fight For Life were my favourites

I picked heading home. Besides being well done, after the US tried to suppress showing casualties of the Iraq war, I hope it gets displayed with more prominance on their site.

Right now, it's the leader at 21% of the vote.

I liked "Fire and Water," "Triage" and "All In." I don't know why, but those were my favorites.
