| I'm considering getting a Canon 75-300mm telefoto (either the Image Stabilizer one or the regular) and I'm wondering whether or not the extra $400 is worth it. Any opinions? |

| Dont know with that particular lense but i know IS is great. And its a must if you do a lot of handheld shots |

I have the IS version. I love the IS but it gets a bit soft past 200. Still very useable though (helps to stop down a bit).
On DRebel 300D:
At 300mm ISO 200 F5.6 1/160
At 240mm ISO 1600! F13 1/1600 |

| The IS really does work, I have the 100-400 and when you switch IS on it makes a big difference, especially out at full zoom, also very good for when the light is starting to go. |

What kind of shooting are you planing on doing with your new lens?

forget IS, images with IS are never TACK sharp. It may get you a shot in the dark that you couldn't have gotten otherwise but none will be sharp. Spend the extra $400 on a tripod.

| Better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it. I had the lens without it and returned it to get the one with it. |

IS is great for situations where a tripod is not allowed or not practical.
I have the 75-300 IS lens but have just recently upgraded to a longer zoom.
If you check my portfolio, most of the chipmunk and chickadee shots were done with that lens.
