Just wondered what techniques people use to add borders and frames to their shots?

I use photoshop.
I select the whole image, copy.
File > new (to make a new canvas)
change the pixels in the pop up box to be greater (they should match the image size you copied)
change the color of the canvas by using the "fill" tool.
past the image onto the new canvas.
I repeat the steps if I feel it is necessary to add multiple borders of different colors and/or sizes.
layer>flatten image
then I resize the entire thing to dpc size (640 px on the longest side).
I only use a border if I feel it will enhance the image or make it stand out against the gray color of the page better. Otherwise, I leave it alone.

saw this on here a week or so back so can't claim it as my own.. I do use it now though..
Re-size my image to 620 on longest side,
sharpen
set my background colour to inner border colour
use image canvas size
tick the relative box
Make sure settings are in pixels and put 4 in heigh and width
set my background colour to outer border colour
use image canvas size
same settings now use 16 pixels...
save and submit..
BTW photoshop 7

Open the original image, then open the Image Size dialog in PS. Make the canvas size larger than the image size to accomodate a border. Then select everything and go to 'Edit'->'Stroke' and add an inside stroke.

I use stroke too, its much easier, i think it borders over pixels, but keeps the image size the same.

You can also:
Double click the background layer to make into a normal layer
Go to > Edit > Layer Style > Stroke - adjust colour, position (centre, inside or outside) to heart's content
This negates any editing of the actual image at all.
Note: this is for PS v7 - I think you can do this through Layer Effects in PS v5-6
