How about some variation of this thought. One of the best ways to improve your own photography is to view and thoroughly critique someone else's work. I would propose that instead of a member's challenge photo, the challenge of the week would be to critique as many other pieces as you are able to do. I don't have a clear thought on establishing a "winner" or what the prize should be. I'll leave that up to the group's discussion.
What do you all think? |

I was thinking about something like this...more of a skill building exercise than a "win something" sort of thing, but I like the idea of working on our critique skills collectively.

I like the idea. there are some that come through with winning comments. I do not mind the "what is this?" comments or "WOW!" I can live with those as well, but to have some kind of recognition for those that supply clear well thought out comments would be nice. |

How about site council posting one pic, and everyone writes an in depth (aka Critique Club style) critique, then we rate the critique.

There are people here who make forum posts all the time asking for critiques and comments...

Making critical judgements on others work is its own reward, IMO. Most of us submit photos in an attempt to win the challenge, or occasionally an attempt to put the cat among the pigeons, we should leave the forming of opinions to its present unofficial status.
I do think too many people ask for a critique from CC as a matter of course, and the sooner that is changed the better: hopefully some of the utter rubbish photos will disappear from the queue.
I quite often write at some length directly into the comments on a challenge, rather than being forced to write something on an image I don't have any feeling for through CC.

I for one asked for a CC critique on this week's photo, but not out of habit. I really thought this one had a shot at winning, like actually pictured a ribbon for it and everything. It's currently at 4.2 with 80 votes and one positive comment. Maybe it is "utter rubbish" and I'm just not bright enough to figure that out. I think this will be my last submission to this site. It's not just a "they don't get it" huffy reaction -- it's that my taste in photos (and my family's, and my friends') is clearly so very different from that of the dpc people's that I'm not getting anything out of this site any more.
I take photos for myself. Or I used to. I started taking them to please the people here, and found that my scores plummeted. Then I went back to taking them for myself. My scores plummeted even lower. Unless there are about 100 people out there giving 1s to my photos every week out of spite or something, I suppose my work is just not cut out for this place. Without comments, I don't know why, but I'll at least leave the comment of "seeya" in return. It's supposed to be fun, and it stopped being fun a long time ago. Best way for it to be fun again is for me to just go on my merry way and not hang around for validation or constructive commentary that I simply don't get here.
I suppose this should have gone into rant. Sorry about that. Have fun, everybody! Great work!

Actually I think that is a slightly huffy reaction carolee: your scorring an average 5.2something, which isn't so very bad, you've had a shot in the 20's somewhere, a couple more well into the top quarter.
I'm also scoring at 4.2something at the moment for trends. Heading for my lowest ever score with what certainly isn't my worst nor least challenge-meeting photo. Though obviously that's only my opinion.
Sure, leave, if that's what you want to do. But you don't have an issue of tast with dpc - don't fool yourself there - it's just harder than you thought to win, huh?

O.K. it seems I have been misunderstood, again.
Let's try painting this picture a different way.......
How about a challenge without a topic, without scores - comments are the only input. No ribbons, no winners (except those that learned something about photography...), just comments. Improve your commenting abilities and learn to help other photographers.
Wellllll, shoot me. |

I like your idea of critiques being somehow recognized, it would probably encourage people to comment more and more competantly, and I also agree has potential to create better photographers. Practically I have no idea how to incorporate it to site. Maybe people could just nominate critiques and comments that seemed especially thoughtful and insightful . |

Maybe I'm one of the bad guys:( I routinely ask for a CC critique. I have entered 6 Challenges, received 39 comments, most of them on a submission that i knew was flawed. My average score is about 4.7 does this make my photo rubbish? If so I'd like to know why. Maybe I can improve myself. If all you want to do is critique the winners do it while you are voting. By the way in six challenges I have received 1 CC critique, I'm not complaining but I'd like to get my "rubbish" in the Queue!!!

I believe the dual purposes of the CC are to help its members look at and evaluate photos in a constructively critical way, and to articulate those observations to the photographer so they can learn from their experience.
Both of these suggest that, if there's any priority given (vs. random) or preferences it should be for the LOWER-SCORING photos, which presumably need more help, and will have more things for the CC reviewer to observe/comment on.
I don't think we should be discouraging people from asking for a review if they think their photo won't score well. To have a CC review which reads "great light, focus, cropping, etc.--can't think what I'd do different" spread out over four paragraphs must feel great to the recipient, but probably isn't as "helpful" as some comments on a photo which got a 4.273.
