Ok, so I'm trying to replace my olympus c5050. After looking around the internet I came across the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with EF-S 18-55mm.
Does anyone know any useful information about this camera (the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with EF-S 18-55mm )?
One bad thing about the Olympus c5050 was the shutter speed kinda lagged... so I want my next camera's "click" speed to be faster. Another question I have is regarding the term "optical view finder". WHat is it? do I need it?
WEll I hope someone out there has some information. thanks

Optical view finder means you look through something to see your image, like a film camera. You cannot use the screen on the back of the camera to compose your image. As far as shutter lag goes, you will have almost none with that camera. Just to let you know, I own that camera.

DPReview of 350

Also do a fourm search here, you will find all sorts of useful information!

And don't listen to what people say about the EF-S 18-55 being a crappy lens. It's a perfectly good kit lens that is nice to start out with and if you have doubts, check this out

Every dSLR has an optical view finder. What this means is that when looking through the view finder you are looking through the lens. You're seeing what the lens is seeing and not some close approximation.

The closest on a P & S camera is an electronic view finder. All other P & S view finders are just a window thru the camera. They are offset slightly from the lens so what you see thru the viewfinder isn't exactly what you get.

I went from the Panasonic FZ20 to the Rebel XT. The Rebel XT is a great camera in speed and ability. As for you question "optical view finder" means you see what the lens sees not a rendition in the way of a EVF (Electronic View Finder). This is very important because you see the light as your lens sees it. Most all P&S cameras have a EVF and it's hard to see in low light. Optical view finder will give you the best results.

I would suggest a different lens even though the 18-55mm kit lens is ok it just don't perform up to standards of other lens. A good replacement would be the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR Di II for canon. You can get it for about $365 from B&H photo.

So I feel its best to buy the body (Rebel XT) and the above mentioned lens to start.

i have both cameras and they are both great but of course the jump to the rebel is a massive improvement but i still cant complain about the olympus c5050 its a great camera for its catgaory and i still use mine for higher risk area (where it might get stolen or borken)

I would also herald the ability of that little kit lens. Although I eventually upgraded, I considered it quite able. It's ability over any non SLR should be apparent.

There are also different types of optical viewfinders and different coverages in view.

Generarally speaking pentaprism viewfinders are better than the pentamirror viewfinders. Pentamirrors tend to give more of a tunnel like view through the viewfinder while pentaprisms are generally only found on higher end model cameras.

cheers,
bazz.
