Don't do it!

Good self-editing abilities have gotten your average above 6.00 here at DPC. If you thinking your entry ain't gonna score too well in the upcoming challenge then your probably right.

Ha. Bazz, one of the few speaking some sense. The rest are cheering as I edge closer to the cliff. JUMP! JUMP! JUMP!

I could always self-DQ if it's horrendous. So I'm still in control...

Doc if the image moves you, enter it. The scores don't mean as much in that case. However, if you will lose sleep over it, well.... you control your destiny there ;)

It's in and it's staying in. I really can handle a 4.7 or 4.8, what I don't want is a 4.1 or 3.9. That would just be hard to live with.

And now everybody going into voting that has read this thread better go with an open mind! :)

Title Dependent = Low Score, JMHO:)

I pulled my "Country Life" last night for the same reason.

Ya, I know. My one vanity is my average vote received. A 4.5 would actually need a 7.7 to offset. I don't think I'm getting a 7.7 anytime soon. :)....

Yeah, but a 4.0 only drops yer average to 6.06 or there-abouts, still highly respectable by anyone's standards!

If YOU like the shot then put it in. On your gravestone do you think you'll have your DPC average engraved?

"Here lies Dr. Achoo. He didn't leave the box but achieved a 7.02318 average at DPC. RIP."

How about some words of wisdom from Mark Twain:

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed in the things that you didn't do than in the ones you did do.
So throw off the bow lines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.

Wise words from both you and Mr Twain. :-)

I'm still not sure why people enter things that they like, knowing that others won't, into Challenges. I don't get it.

If you shoot for yourself and you like what you've shot....that's totally cool but if that's the case, why bother ask people for their opinions or subject your stuff to a mass rating system?

I suppose there's something to be said for any kind of exposure but I find it personally painful watching things that I like get slammed.

Having said that...with a 6.1 overall average...I wouldn't give a damn so much what people thought anymore, knowing that I could romp people in Challenges and win ribbons (or place high, consistently). I would take that as a perfect opportunity, to try and expand the DPC mindset with more risque fare.

Nobody with an average above 5.5 should be admitted to the Underground.

The problem for me is that if I love my pictures so very very much why wouldnt everyone love it as well? Surely if I think its the next best thing to sliced bread then everyone else will too. Then reality sets in, I look at my other shots that I just knew were incredible shots and I doubt myself. Eventually, as so many other people have said, I just have to look inside myself and if I find that I really like it and I believe in my photography, I wouldnt do anything different, then I enter it anyway. That is where the regardless of what others think of it comes in. You could probably call it stubborn. As to this kind of thread coming up every challenge, it helps just to put this kind of thing out there. Of course if no one responds and supports you then you look like an amature :)

edit: Its kind of like entering it thinking it will do well and being prepared for it not to and still loving it in spite of others not accepting it.

I'm with ya Doc... My 7s entry is somewhat title dependent as well (although there are a number of sins & virtues that it is difficult to depict solely with a picture). So, I think I'm gonna go for it. I have a feeling my score will suffer as well, but I like the shot a lot, so want to share it. I say go for it. (I'll need some company down near the bottom of the barrel!) LOL :-)

I'm not entering it knowing that it will do poorly. I've always said OOTB is high risk/high reward. There is a chance it will resonate and then you have caught lightning in a bottle. The chance here is probably smallish, but it isn't zero. The picture, I think, is technically excellent (which is a must for OOTB) and has potential for "eureka" moments where people see the picture, wonder what they are looking at and then suddenly they "get it". I think most people who make it there will score 8-10, it's just a matter of getting there as people tend to take about 3-5 seconds a picture.

I guess we'll find out in 12 hours...

Enter it.

I didn't quite realize what a bad reception my abstract would get, but I'm glad I entered it, and glad that I did not self DQ it.

Hey, I got a fav, so it was slightly worth it :O)

Gosh I hate when that happens...(not that you still love it, that part's good - I just hit the Post button before I typed anything. That's what I meant by "Gosh I hate when that happens...)

Anyway, what I wanted to say was that it's not that one's shots may not be as good as others, it's that they may not resonate with others. I like it when folks take risks - you get some really great, great pics to see that you wouldn't otherwise, and they aren't always the ribbon winners, or in the top ten for that matter.

It's a matter of taste, experience, "feel", and so many other things that draws you to a picture, either your own or someone else's. If you wander through the Underground thread, you'll see some marvelous examples. Good luck on the "eureka" moments, Doc! There will be some, and that'll make it all worthwhile.

What's wrong with a 4.2? I'd kill for that now :)
