Since our GTG is on Wildflower weekend at Natural Bridge I thought this was relevant...
Hello,
We normally do not send out more than one e-mail per month, but it has just come to
our attention that there has been a mix-up at Natural Bridge's Hemlock Lodge. Some
of you may have been told in error that there are no lodge rooms available for
Herpetology Weekend and/or Wildflower Weekend. In fact, we do have many rooms
available on both weekends, please call 800-325-1710 for more information. In
addition, you may now make reservations at all Kentucky State Park campgrounds by
going to //www.reserveamerica.com.
Thanks,
Zeb Weese

Hey you all, looks like I'm back on for this (insert backflips here)!!!! The friend who wanted me to photograph her wedding really wanted a pro and I told her I would love to do it but do not trust my equipment to be good enough in church settings to get what she expects. So I gave her a number for a friend who probably can do it. Now I just have to get rid of my duty (work) for that day and I'm all set, really don't see a problem doing that though.
I can hardly wait for this.

Good, glad your back.
I've went up to the gorge to scout things out the past couple weeks. The redbuds are in bloom, lots of trees are greening up, the service berry is starting to bloom, lots of wild flox, wild violets blooming, toothwart, anemone and spring beauties to name a few, by may 6 hopefully the trilliums will be in full bloom... |

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Yeah we know. Oh well, we will just have to miss the crowds and around Louisville that weekend. Take lots of derby pics. Get some celeb shots. I'm off to Marshall to try to get a few of the two Matthews. Wish I had a longer lens. Dang it.

2) WHAT'S BEEN BLOOMING...
Here's just a few of the wildflowers we've been seeing in bloom in mid-April:
Rock Garden and Low Gap trails : Red trillium, large-flowered trillium, spring beauties, rue anemone, Bishop's cap, crested iris, foamflower, long-spurred violet
Original trail : Solomon's seal, purple phacelia, wood phlox, stonecrop, bellwort, wild geranium, star chickweed, wild columbine
Laurel Ridge trail : Dwarf crested iris, bird's foot violet, trailing arbutus
------------------------------------------------------------------
3) ...AND FLYING AROUND THE PARK!
Here's just a few of the songbirds we've been hearing as of mid-April: Hooded warblers, Black-and-white warblers, Yellow-throated warblers, ovenbirds, Black-throated-green warblers, Pine warblers, Louisiana waterthrushes, and Blue-headed vireos.
Natural Bridge is not only home to lots of wildflowers, it's also home to quite a few songbirds that require large tracts of mature forest for their summer breeding ground. These guys are not your typical backyard birds! In fact, for the last four years we have been working on a bird-banding research project with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission to get a better idea how successful our breeding bird populations are here in the park. For more information on this project and the birds of Natural Bridge just contact the naturalist office at 1-606-663-2214 or //parks.ky.gov/resortparks/nb/contact.htm
------------------------------------------------------------------
4) INVASIVE SPECIES VOLUNTEER WORKSHOPS
May 6th and the first Saturday of each month in 2006!
Natural Bridge has long been a favorite of native plant enthusiasts because of its biodiversity. But like all good things, this diversity will not remain without a little bit of effort. One of the largest problems facing natural areas is the invasion of species from other parts of the world. A few plant species from Europe and Asia are overtaking habitat needed by our native plant species at Natural Bridge. Many of the have accidentally "escaped" from gardens, some spread as seeds are carried on the boots of hikers, and a few of the worst we actually planted on purpose years ago before biologists realized the damage they would cause. While a visitor to Natural Bridge in 2005 might see a hundred different wildflower species blooming, potentially a visitor in 2025 may only see twenty species, and one of these days there might be nothing but kudzu! Help stop this invasion by volunteering to assist the naturalist staff in pulling and cutting some of the worst invaders. This is great opportunity for individuals and groups to improve the ecological health of our public lands!
When: January 7 and the first Saturday of each month in 2006!
Interested groups can schedule other volunteer dates in addition to these! Each volunteer day begins at 9:00 am at Natural Bridge's Hemlock Lodge and ends whenever you get tired! Please call or e-mail ahead if possible.
What to bring: Work gloves and a good attitude!
For more information contact Zeb Weese at jason.weese@ky.gov.

It's almost here all...but I am out...again. Can't find someone to change work days with so I will be sitting at a desk answering phones from 7am-7pm YIPEEE FOR ME! (but on the plus side my wife is planning for us and her family to go down there over mother's day weekend)
My wife (in Georgetown) mentioned that it is probably best as the weather looks a little like rain this weekend...of course depending on who you watch or look at.
from NOAA.GOV weather site
from weather.com
from KY weather forecast
All seem to say 30% chance of rain in Stanton area on Saturday. Of course with the coverage the trees give on the hike it might be fine.
Have fun all and be safe.
