I just bought a 77mm B+W circular polarizer (love the knurling feature) from ebay. My lens is filter size 62mm, and I have a 1A Quantaray skylight filter on it at all times. I'm wondering if stacking via a step-up ring would be a good idea. I have the ring already, but I'm unsure about image degradation and flare. If anything, I'd just not use the skylight filter and screw on the polarizer when necessary. It's just much less time consuming to stack it directly onto the filter when I need it.

Every sheet of glass will potentially degrade the image quality, so remove the skylight filter when using the polarizer.

The HB-18 lens hood will provide as much protection as your 28-105 lens needs, so either chunk the Quantaray skylight filetr in the trash or save it for rare instances it's really needed such as sea spray. The 77 polar will work fine on your lens with the step up ring, but of course your chance for flare will increase due to more surface area.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll have to stop being lazy and swap the skylight when I need to.

About hoods though: I don't really think they would provide ample protection against anything but minor bumps. If you only knew how clumsy I am... I'd probably bump it more with extra length of the hood.
