Hi, I'm quite new here on the boards and new to (d)SLR photography as well. I've been learned that dumb questions don't exist, only dumb answers so here goes:

Whereever I go in the "world" of photography, everybody is talking about metering and different metering modes you can use (spot-metering one of them I can remember but is not possible on my EOS 350D), but what exactly is metering? And how do you use it effectively?

Thanks,
Dimitry

P.S. Any comments on my portfolio thus far are welcome too!

Hi Dimitry, welcome to DPC.

I'm no expert, but have a look at the tutorials that are offered on this site under "Learn" on the top blue bar menu.

Has helped me heaps!

Metering
The process of calculating the exposure from the existing light conditions.

Good luck!
