Fairness is one thing, but that creates a huge risk of a team not having four members participating in a given week if people don't like the challenges that week and assume their teammates will.

Lets face it, the WPL is a team based competition so there MUST be some communication within teams.

For example, both Manic35 and myself will be away from computer access for a period of 72 hours from Wednesday afternoon due to work commitments. This means we will not know the Open-Challenge topics for some time but will be staying somewhere that is ideal for photography. As a result Manic35 has asked one of our teammates to 'text' us the challenge topics via mobile phone so that we are informed.

This type of communication within teams must be allowed if we are to function as teams.

I agree!

Me too. If someone can't enter a challenge for whatever reason, the other team members should know about it so that they can compensate for the loss of the member's entry. I do agree with the not discussing the specific entry though, that is a fair rule.
03/27/2006 08:27:43 PM · #1230
Yes I agree it is no different to posting in the forums that you might sit this one out because of lack of ideas. This happens all the time here.
03/27/2006 08:36:41 PM · #1231
Maybe each team could have there own thread. We can communicate & post some of this information and it would be all up and up since everyone could check the threads. Just an idea ?
03/27/2006 08:43:09 PM · #1232
I don't see anything wrong with a little comunication. I do agree that we should still keep our photo secret...so teams don't search for their teamates and give out tens. I don't think sharing some ideas is so bad...but not saying I'm going to shoot this you shoot that...and so forth. As long as all team members can go and vote and still not know who's photos are who's.

I think that is a good idea. We could name the tread the team name but everything we talk about would be for public viewing. I think we need something a little more private so that other teams can't view your discussion and ideas. I was thinking like a messenger service- msn, yahoo, etc. that way it would be private.

NOTE: privacy is not for sharing photographs but discussion. sharing photographs are still in my opinion against the spirit of the rules

Messenger services are a great idea, same for having a thread for each team. I'm not sure if MSN supports group chats, but I know that AOL IM does. Another great messenging program is Google Talk, it's in beta right now and is invite only and there is no group chat, but the voice chat function is incredible. Anyone who has a GMail account can download and use it and anyone who wants a GMail account can just PM me with their email addy and I'll send them an invite.

I'm not even talking about sharing ideas really. But if I want to sit out of a challenge I can post that in the forums and my team members should know that.

Then you really can't stop someone who may PM you and say "hey what about doing something like this". That goes on here now as long as your photo is not shared but I know that even goes on as well ( not that I like it)

Yahoo messenger has a great group talk function

I definately think some comm. is needed. Espically if someone is unable to shoot an entry. The team needs to know if their will be 4 people to fill the minimum.

I plan on having a shot for every challenge. I figure any shot is better that a team DQ for only have 3 entries.

so someone please explain again. with all the many on-going "leagues" i am confused now.

did the WPL start last Sunday with water? and continues to tonight's rollover?

So for members, my best score counts right? Either Water or Macro/Playtime. Right?
03/29/2006 01:37:31 AM · #1239
WPL Started with yellow. :-) Yes best score.

oh so it's Yellow, Children's Toys, and Refraction?
03/29/2006 01:39:58 AM · #1241
WPL started Sunday with Yellow III and tonight (if you wish to enter more than one challenge) with Children's Toy and Refraction of Light. Under the schedule at WPL you will see what challenges are valid for the week. I have yellow in there under members and was just going to update the open challenges when I seen your post.

The first weeks results will be updated Tuesday night at the end of the two open challenges that was announced tonight.

Hope that helps.

It's updated now. Thanks Rikki and to all that complimented on the site. I hope this will bring people together as a community with some good old fun in competition.

I have already started updates for next season. I think people will find it very interesting.

There were some photographers that wanted to participate this season but all teams were full. I am making up a sub-photographer list it you would like to be on it for this season.

Why would you need a sub? If a team has a player that can no longer compete then they can sub that player with any sub on the WPL list (which I will be updating). The player that is picked as a sub will remain that teams player for the remainder of the season and playoffs. Each team can only use two subs per season.

The rules will be explained in detail before the week is out under the rules section at WPL.

Again thank to all,
-SDW

Some users wanted to participate in WPL but the teams were full. I have added a substitute photographers link where you can sign up. You will find the rules concerning substitute photographers under the rules section and substitute section.

I dig it...that way if certain people that jumped on the band wagon only because it was something new and really didn't want to put any time in to then we have a way of replacing them. Should there be a certain amount of challenges that a team member should participate in...or maybe if they miss a certain amount in a row like 4 weeks without entering one challenge...should they be allowed to just sit on a team and take up a spot that somebody else would love to have? Should that be left up to the rest of the team and/or team leader? Just some more thoughts.

I like that idea. That way, other people will have a chance to participate if they wanted to.

I would make it 3 weeks.

I don't think we should change rules as we go along. The first season has started, we have a set of rules and we should stick to them. Having said that, it is obvious that we will learn from any and all mistakes made and next season we can add, replace or omit any of the current rules. Changing the rules during an ongoing season is ><)))):>y business in my opinion.

Regarding communication between teams. There is no way of controlling communication between the teams. I would think that it is possible to check if teammembers are giving 10's to their peers, but let's assume that we are fair players, all of us.
One of the other teams has just told us how they need to text each other, and of course they should do that. I myslef had to ask another teammember what the word refraction meant, but the answer appeared on one of the threads before he had to answer.

And just to inform the opposition. I seem to be getting closer to the phsyce of the site, my abstract macro is doing better than any of my other entries.
OK OK OK, that is not difficult :-), but just imagine if I keep climbing ... now hold that thought, cherish it.

And now, back to yellow and refraction, hmmmmmmppphf

That was a party political broadcast on behalf of the Nikon party.

Our secret ICLANDIC weapon has been loaded ... You have been warned.

OK... so where's my team and how we doing? Unfortunately I am stuck in D.C. for work until Friday night so I am going to have to scramble this weekend to get pics submitted for the open and member challenges.

No worries though.... I got some good ideas!
(finding the "supplies" for them could be difficult though)
