I have a Canon 20D; my best lens in my feeble inventory is the 28-135 IS.
My bid for a product shoot has been approved and I need to know from the "been there, done that" crowd specifically what gear I need to use. I have about a $2000 budget to up-gear my stuff. The products that I'll shoot are items that are smaller than your hand (example - roll gauze).
If anyone would please list brand names, model names, good vs bad, must have to do it right things, I would greatly appreciate. I do plan to do more product shoots in the future, so investing in some decent stuff now will be like having the right tool for the job.

how big are these products gonna be printed? You should think about getting the canon TS-e 90mm

These images will be for an internet site; however, I will provide them on CD for enlargement, if they choose. So, I'm going to shoot them as if they're going to be printed. |

Your 20D should be fine. You might pick up a 24-70 2.8 or the 70-200 2.8 to shoot them with if you don't want primes.

What primes would you suggest for close-up product type shots?

I think the camera and lens will work just fine, that lens is sharp. What you need is some lighting. External flashes ... at least 2 I'd say, and some umbrellas.

Personally, I'd go with the wonder of all lenses - the Canon 50mm 1.8 (under $100) - and a 48"-ish light box. Might add a couple of stands or props - but that should do nicely.
Edit to add: And 2 Alien Bee 400 flash units
