Thanks for all the comments, but i'd also like to hear from the people that posted first arguing with me. Or maybe silence is implying "I'm done". Or maybe you didn't get a chance to look over it again after posting.

David,
My response to you was only as offensive as your original post. If you look carefully the 'offending' line was merely a paraphrase of your own comments.
I agree it would have been prudent to check your profile before posting, however it really changes nothing. I find your view point arrogant regardless of man or boy. To say that someone's efforts 'almost sicken' you is disgusting by any standards. There are photos on here that I do not like, I comment as such and feel no need to sweeten the pill. Common courtesy and some respect for effort are a given though.
BTW you are correct about number of favourites etc.. Maybe that makes you a better photographer than me, I for one, don't care. Have you considered that the people who like your images are technically inept and don't know what they're looking at? Wouldn't that be a 'sickener'?
The whole point of your thread seems to be 'look at me, I know all about photography and I'll tell you straight from the hip how to improve yours'.. Clearly, I for one am not worthy. Let's hope our paths go in seperate directions.
Please don't PM me again. I am no longer interested in this thread or what you have to say. 'I give up'

This thread is going the wrong way. Stop fighting boys!
David - What you said in your initial post was a trite offensive, but I can see past that and get the message you were trying to convey. You have an adept vocabulary and a writing style beyond your years, but in the same breath you show us that you are a kid and lack the judgement of we who are long in the tooth. This isn't a real problem, just be considerate. We are people with feelings, some more fragile than others, but that's what makes us individuals. I believe you make valid points, and sometimes I agree with them. Some things are better left unsaid though. 'sicken' is probably better left unsaid.
Back to the topic - The "helpful" button is not always used as such. Helpful comments are easy to achieve. So what? Who's keeping score?
If that makes you more mindful of your comments to say things that actually might be helpful, then the checkbox is doing something. If it makes you not want to say anything bad about the photo because you are afraid the photog will not check the box, then that is not helpful. Once again, so what?
My opinion on it all is that I'm going to leave comments that are at least remotely meaningful for the majority of them I leave. It never hurt anyone to give some pat-on-the-back comments to the exceptional pictures. We see pictures all the time that aren't really in the same league as the top 20 or so. We've all taken those pictures too. I'll say nothing before I leave a comment like "this picture, no matter what, should not have been entered in any challenge." I've done it before, and the photographer did not agree with that. It was not the right thing to do. Etiquette is a factor with any comment that you leave. If it isn't, it should be.
I think a helpful comment is one that sticks with you when you are shooting, even as much as you hate it. And if it can do that, you will be a better photographer for it and should appropriately thank the person who said it, even if it was mean and it pissed you off. I was lucky enough to have someone give me the hard line on my photos. It was something I didn't want to hear and at the time didn't believe it. I thanked that person after I got my first ribbon.
okay, done - Bob

If you look at his very early work, and indeed the line drawings, I think you might have to revise this opinion :-) The cubism, and the more structured 'mature' work, was a result of his dissatisfaction with the limits of orthodox approaches. Some of the abstract enthusiasts here might like to take god note of that, incidentally.

@ Ed - you're absolutely right - I was more making a point that the things he's remembered for in the pop-culture sense, are technically flawed. His subject's eyes aren't symmetrical and the flowers occasionally grow from people's heads - all things that our young Mr. Levin might criticize for not being accurate. I'm more of a Dali/Munch fan than a Picasso fan, but I certainly respect his art.
@David - I left this conversation when it got childish and petty. I'm all for actual discussion and controversy if it's got a reasonable foundation. When turns to mindless banter (I'm not just pointing at you either) I'm no longer interested. I don't give up, I just don't care.
Thanks to Bob for bringing to back on track.
I stand by my original opinion that a favourites list is personal and subjective, and you have no business judging that. Critiques of photos, on the other hand, are fair game. If they're thoughtful, constructive and fair, i couldn't care less if you're nice. "This blows" or something similar, does not qualify in either case. "This blows because your lighting is harsh, you've cropped half of your subjects ear off, and i see a fingerpint on the lens of your camera" - now THAT is a useful critique.
Personally, I always try to put in something I like as well - it's useful to know what people DO like, as well as what they don't.
*edited for typo ;)

I'm very sorry if you think that your first post is as offending as mine.
To call someone an idiot is by far (imo) worse than what I had said, and either way, youre putting words into my mouth. I did not say "it sickens me that people try". Seeing there is a challenge topic of "Paper" and taking a snapshot of a sheet of paper is imo not an effort.
About the favorites, its what shows me that there are people who actually like the kind of photography I do. Once again, you put words into my mouth- I never said "EVERYONE here has bad taste, and i have only the best taste".
The whole point of my forum was not to praise or laud myself! I was simply giving my opinion with absolutley no intention of making people improve their photography. That's why I put this one in the Rant section.

Actually, you put it in the General Discussion section.
I moved it to the Rant section, after being asked to by more than one user.
