So far, I like it for the horizontal shots, but not for the vertical shots. I run 1024x768.

Ask me again inna week! ;-)

I view on several computers. Most of them are 1024x768. I use the F11 trick and I find it totally fantastic!

Some of the pics that have been edited for this size are simply breathtaking. I have found a few that look a little softer than the probably ought to in this challenge and I wonder if this is showing what can be gotten away with at smaller sizes but not at larger sizes.

Maybe nothing and just my overactive imagination though.

I absolutely love it and I would love to enter a contest that had this standard.

I run mine in 1152x864 and I can just see the whole picture when it's vertical. If it was any bigger, though, I'd have to scroll.. that would kinda suck.
I like '720'. :)

'720'? as much as that? whoops!

Well, I run on a widescreen monitor, and let's just say without doing F11, on a 640 vertical shot, I have to scroll even. So on '720', it's horrendous. I like the fact that I can see detail, and if it's a horizontal shot, it's perfect, but for vertical...I'm not so hot on it.

It has no discernable difference on my end. The detail isn't any different on my 1600x1200 21" flat panel monitor.

if you want to try it in a landscape challenge that's fine... i don't like it for portrait either.

I've rated all the pics now in the challenge. I must say that I think the photographers who have a vertical shot are at a disadvantage over those who shot horizontally. I am not saying that it gives them bad scores, I am just saying I don't think the photos present as well.

I tend to agree, as first impression utterly important.
I also run 1024x768 and cannot go larger due to it being max on my 15"LCD screen. Even F11 maximizing isn't quite enough on a full '720' due to the DPC header taking the top of the page.

At work on the 800x600 the verticals sucked
On my own home pc the wides are ok. Nothing spectacular extra, but doesn't hurt much either.

I am indifferent about it.

I liked it. Don't have to squint while using 1680x1050.

I would say its a dude.

If it was just a little better, peeps would be screaming how much better it looks, and we have to change it to '720' pix.

We have none of that, for the most part people are just meh.

I dont care either way, but it just not seem to matter too much.

I'm just digging whoever mentioned the f11 thing! I know I'll be using that a lot more!
edit to say... I don't even get the full vertical in the 640 size :0(

Uhh, I said I love it. It's the first time in a long while that I just sat staring at my computer screen marveling at the loveliness of the images. I found a number of pictures BREATHTAKING that I feel would have lost an edge in a slightly smaller format.

I too use f11 to view pics at 640x480. I think it should be listed in the website as a little pop-up or something (that has a checkbox in it for placing a cookie to not re-appear) when viewing pictures that are height>600. It only takes a second to switch to full-screen view and using this would allow everyone to have no cause for complaint.

On the other hand, I specifically bounced around in the challenge looking for square images and portrait images to see how the looked on a 1024x768 screen and I loved it! I can't wait for a challenge that I have time and resources to enter that I can place in 720x720 format.

Really they should remove the dpchallenge site header on the voting page. It's a waste of space. If the header is removed, tall images will require less scrolling.

I think this is a bad idea. First of all, not everyone has a monitor that can handle that size - myself included. Second, the larger the image, the more you have to degrade the image quality in "Save for Web" to meet the file size limitations. '720' might be a passable idea if the file size limits were also bumped up to compensate, but it still wouldn't fit on my screen, and no one can properly rate a photo unless they can see the whole thing in one glance.
