We've worked hard (namely Langdon) on getting the comment feature up over the past few days, and it's finally in place. A photographer should now be able to see comments on his submission during challenge voting, and then comments will be made public after voting is over. What better reason do you need to check the site daily? :)

I also strongly encourage you to leave feedback on as many of the photographs as you can. This is definitely a feature that will help us all grow as photographers. Enjoy.

Boy, you guys are a little rough on your comments. It would be nice to be able to make some comments back, or explain your idea. Or maybe be a little more specific in your criticizms.

I thought the idea of these challenges was to be able to learn what one may be doing wrong. Or what one could do to be able to take better pictures.

Thoughts of "unoriginal angle" confuses me. What other angle was there? And if the picture quality was bad, maybe a helpful tip would be nice. More light to get rid of the graininess, means absolutely nothing to me. Seems to me that there are quite a few amatuers here that could use a few tips and not so much criticizm.

I'm not sure this comment feature will be a good thing. Anybody else?

Maybe the comment section should be structured with questions like:

Do you have any suggestions that may make this a better photograph? This would at least help the photographer realize what he may be doing wrong.

Yeah, a comment like "too common" doesn't tell me a thing. I also had one that said I should have shown a little less table and more overhead. I don't know how that could be accomplished when the rules said to "place your camera on a table and take the picture from that angle". What you see is the exact perspective of a camera on the table. As I said before, comments are great but use some tact. At least some of us are amatuers doing this for fun. Let's remember that and try to keep it fun for everyone. Lighten up!

You will be able to reply to your comments (as you can now through email if the user chooses to display theirs in their profile).

A comments text box will be at the bottom of every image page. You may add as many comments as you like. However -- we may open up a forum section for further discussion.

I have a few problems with comments made on my image as well.

I'm wondering if its a good idea to let the photographer know who said what about his/her pic. It may make for hurt feelings. If there is a voter who may want to help someone out with some advice, or just wants to discuss different ideas, then I think after the voting is over would be a better time.

When one is making the comments, one does not know who took the picture, and I don't think adding the commentor's name should be required.

I vote for making comments anonymous.

We had actually toyed with the idea of commenting anonymously, but came to the conclusion that it wouldn't help us grow as a community. We're trying to make the site consist of a rather large group of friends.

I see the comment box serving two purposes :

1) to leave praise for the photographer
2) to leave constructive criticism for the photographer

If you're in the mindset that a comment might hurt your feelings, then I don't see how you can grow as a photographer.

Furthermore, I see comments allowing for photographers to make themselves more known. Since the username links to the user's profile, if you leave intelligent and constructive comments it will encourage users to check out your archived images as well as leave comments in return.

Anyone else have an opinion?

If you make the comments anonymous you're going to get a lot more hurt feelings when people, emboldened by their anonymity, start blasting away at every picture they don't like. I feel that if anything, keeping people's names associated with their comments will lead to a bit more restraint and thought.

Wow, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The constructive comments are great, but you would not believe the variations in opinion. It is really kind of funny when you get improvement suggestions that are totally opposite from one another. Keep the comments coming. I'm having a lot of fun with these challenges.

How about the ability to change a submitted comment while voting is open?... at the moment, after submitting a comment, if you revisit the photo, the comment box is disabled...

We can change a photos vote, so why can't we change its comment??

Thoughts?

Comments can not possibly hurt the photographer unless they allow them to do so.

For those caustic immature kids who leave snide remarks or personal attacks it takes little to consider the source and ignore them.

For the perhaps well meaning ambigious remarks such as "unoriginal" there is little hurt but no help. Perhaps the commentator is unable to provide any real remark.

For the opinion of improvement there is much to be learned. Among them is that people react to images in different ways as evidenced by conflicting comments.

I enjoy seeing the comments sent to me and learn from most. Please keep the feature. As for structuring the comments to avoid hurt--don't bother. No one listens to the advice of a fool anyway.
