My first ribbon and it wasnt even brown!!! Just wanted to thank everyone for their great comments, especially ones that pointed out the flaws such as mysterious green fog around the right arm and and those who pointed out it was too oversharpened. This was a single shot and done in about 20 seconds as my friend was already soaked from walking from the school parking lot and I told him to go out so I could take a shot. I took one shot and he went inside to dry off. I must agree with hot pasta

Since I got this lens I have had my last three scores average about a full point plus higher.
But i just wanted to thank everyone and say that I am so excited to have got a ribbon. And I wanted to thank my friend for going back into the rain for the shot. When I first took it I thought I was going to use it for the something Old challenge and make the PP make the scene dreary with ome sort of title cursing the rain, I am glad I went this way instead. I am rambling but am so ecstatic so I just wanted to thank all you DPCers and now that I am hooked I will be becoming a full member.
Below is the original of the photo I submitted with a detailed description of what I did. Its a bit long but I had to submit it for validation purposes anyway. I always like to see how people PP so maybe it will help someone. Not in the order i did it because I can't remember any more.
This is from CS2 and from layers from bottom to top.
1) Duplicate background layer with some burning of the shirt and USM
2) Shadows layer with layer mode set to Multiply and at 15% opacity.
3) Highlights layer with mode set to Hard light at 100%, then created masked and took out the cement as it was starting to get blown out.
---> Steps 2 and 3 are known as contrast masking and I learned it from following Bear_Music's Landscape Learning Thread
4)Ran a high pass filter at 10 pixels and with layer mode set to Hard Light at 89%. Then used a mask to effect the body at fifty percent and to completely not effect the face. This step made all of the raindrops "pop"
5) Selective Color Layer with a slight boost to greens, and large shift to to the right in cyans. This is was to bring out the greens of the jacket and masked around the body poorly, where you can see a green fog around the arm which I didnt notice until it was already submitted.
6) Channel Mixer laye at 100% with Red(112%) Green(114%) and Blue(96%). I created a layer mask around my friend and this only affected him.
7) Curves Layer where I darkened the whole photo abit but masked out his face to make it stand out.
8)Flattened the image, cropped and ran through Neat image.
9)Resized and ran through USM mask again, This USM was abit too much and was commented on by a few people and I thank them for that.
Thats about it if you read this entire message I am impressed. Once again thank you all again for voting me so highly as to get a ribbon! |

It's a lovely capture!!
For the benefit of those who haven't the energy to read through the long Landscape Learning thread - what were the steps you took that lead to the green fogging around the right hand and arm? Just curious!

The green fog wasn't from the contrast masking, it was from my layer of Selective Color. I created a layermask so that only the jacket would be affected by the changes. But when I was erasing the parts I didn't want it to adjust I didn't completely erase close enough to the arm and left some of the adjustment around the arm and in the cement.

Congratulations on your ribbon. Since I bought my 50mm 1.4, things are moving fast, and even though my best shots are not sky high when it comes to scores, they are my best to date and are all taken with the 50thingy.
Thank you for taking the time to post all your PP-ing. I have a lot to learn in that area too and this kind of information is very helpful now that I am trying to distance myself from that brown I started of with. Or at least I think that is what is meant with a brown ribbon.

Awesome shot and PP. Really nice work. I didn't even notice the USM halo by the right hand and don''t mind it at all now tha tI know it's there. Really crisp and refreshing image. I need to put my 50mm to better use! |
