I've been trying to keep my head above the quickly growing number of unprocessed shots on my computer and it got me thinking. How many shots do you guys usually come home with that need processing?
How many total shots?
How many shots are decent?
How many shots end up getting processed with the full hands-on treatment?
How many get batch mode?
just curious.
My average seems to be 150-250 with my S2, and 100-200 with the 30D (unless I give up based on abysmal shooting conditions which doesn't always happen because I'm often guilty of shooting things that can't be captured).
What's really scary is that I was pulling 1 shot in 10 with the S2 to process, but I'm down to 1 shot in 3 now. Taking 30% less pictures is one thing. Taking 300% more decent ones is another... |

Much like you, Kieren, I used to take several hundred horrid shots every weekend and be thrilled to find one gem in the bunch. Now I still shoot several hundred each weekend, but am surprised when I find a totally unusable one... granted I still don't love EVERY shot, but the vast majority are worth keeping now.

30-40, usually keep about 10, fully process about 4-5
(Seems I gotta start snapping more)

My stats are pretty similar to yours!
I tend to shot 150-250 shots on an outing. Unfortunately with the SLR it is more difficult to throw 1/2 the images awas at the initial view as they are mostly pretty good.
Getting the time to process them is more of a problem. I shoot mainly Jpeg, and when I do Raw, it is always combined with Jpeg so I can still show the images without having to process them.

Usually, something like 300-500 for a big outing or event that we're taking pics of. We came back with 7-800 full from this past weekend.
I usually run everything once-through on Picasa (yes, I know) just for a quick look. Anthing that I see with potential I'll "star" and come back to later with Photoshop. Anything immediately OOF or complete crap, I trash right away. Downloading 1.5gig at a time will do that to ya.
I'll then go back and trash anything that is okay, but I'll never use, and parse through similar shots.
Almost never batch anything. Usually the light levels on candids and events vary too widely.

How many depends on the reason for the shoot. For example, for an engagement shoot, I'm usually somewhere around 150. Some of them are posed, but some of them are more like "action shots" (rapid fire, looking for spontaneity). Kinda like this:
Of course, the more posed shots there are, the fewer total images I take. :-)
As for how many I process, I typically do batch processing and show to the customer only about 50% of what I shoot. Then it's really up to the customer how many I do full processing on. Here's an example:

I had a great holiday last year.
Started in New York, flew to San Francisco, drove to Yosemite for 2 days, drove to and though Death Valley and finally drove to Vegas where i spent 13 days including a day at the Grand Canyon.
Some of this travel was for work but i still managed to take nearly 2000 picture with my newly purchased 350D (Rebel XT).
OK this isn't a normal photo trip but it was a huge number to process.

Maybe you need to edit more heavily ?
I often take a few hundred and maybe show or print 2. If I go away for a week long shoot, I'll try to end up with about a dozen images out of maybe 2 or 3 thousand. I tend to shoot along the theme of sketching out ideas though, so I can usually see a progression towards 'the' shot in my images.
I tend to do a 3 pass selection process - first pass, trash the blurry, out of focus or obviously bad due to technical issues, test shots etc.
(I do this in Photoshop bridge with the following process:
Mark everything as a 2 star and set bridge to show 2star or greater rankings only) Set the ranking to not need Ctrl (in options))
View the images in slide show, anything bad gets a '1' ranking - (hit 1) and doesn't get shown with the filter on.
Then the next pass, I'll vote 'up' good shots, to a 3 or 4 level.
Third pass bump up the show 3 or above ranking level and do again, and so on.
Most people show far too many permutations and variations on the same theme. Have some convictions - pick what _you_ think is good, don't make your viewers decide from half a dozen variations on a theme, it just weakens the overall look.
pbase.com galleries are usually a good example of this lack of conviction in action. You'll get better if you are more willing to make these decisions in editing, as you'll tend to have a better idea what you want to do when you shoot too.

When I head out to shoot in the 'hood, normally I'll come back with 6-10 images and finally process 2 or 3 of those.
If I go further afield, like down-cape to Provincetown and the National Seashore, I may shoot 40 images and finally process 6-8 of them.
I don't think I have ever filled my 1Gb card on a single days' shoot, and I work in RAW.

Bear, you need a 5D. That'll fix you up real good -- fitting only 56 RAW images on a 1G card. It's really quite painful - I get nervous the moment my counter drops below 100. And so to *start* below 100 really bothers me! (time for some 2G and 4G cards, I suppose) |

Total: 1-1000 depends on length of day and mood I'm in
Decent: 1-300, again depends on what I'm shooting and the mood I'm in
Processed: 1-50 but it happens over weeks as I go back to images again and again with different mind-sets and different requirements. I'm still editing images I took in December.
Batch: 0
Only Batch RAW when shooting dark/dim lighting or indoor tungsten shots and only because I keep forgetting to reset my RAW converter to NOT decide what a shot needs.
Some days, pulling out the camera, even on a shoot, is just painful. If I have a job, on those days I might shoot 20 just to make sure I get something usable for the paper (have done as little as 5 and send them 4). Other days if it moves, I shoot it (wait - that's hunting) and can fill up a 1G card in less than an hour (112 images). |

i shoot from 50 - 200. every so often i may fill the card, depending on the topic of the day and what i get. i have a tendancy to go out looking for specific things. i shoot gallons of whatever it is i am looking for. i think of it like this:
ifn i dont shoot it, then i missed it. ifn i shoot it and it is bad then i could always delete (though i never do that).
i have only recently began to incorporate pp into my whole photo experience. i think that is an important part of the whole endeavor, but i mostly shoot for my own pleasure, not really for show.
i did come here, however, to learn to shoot for the pleasure of others.

I take one shot...
...and it's always a slam dunk work of art straight from the camera.
I let one of my many groupies process the image.

I did fill two 2Gb cards in half an hour last weekend (shooting JPEGs)
It starts getting silly round about then :) |

average usually around 300 - 400 (many duplicates in there also) so I would keep anywhere from 100 to a half of what I shoot.
My last outing a couple of days ago I shot about 300 kept about 80, at the last DPC meet I filled up 2 and a half of 1 gig cards.

Me thinks thou doth exaggerate...your friend took and average of 56 shots per hour 24 hours a day for 30 days? |

I am impressed. I almost always fill a gig if not 2 shooting in RAW.

With enough memory, I could hit 40,000 in a little under an hour and a half :) The joys of 8fps |

It's possible he was shooting sports...
I shot soccer 12 games in one day (8am to 8pm) last fall. I averaged a little over 600 pictures per game. Total: 7200+ pictures in one day.
And if you're calculating... that works out to 600 pictures per hour - 10 pictures per minute. Of course, it's not that steady of a pace. But when you can shoot 5 frames per second and you see the action coming at you, it's easy to shoot 20+ frames in just seconds.

A sign of somebody who knows exactly what he is shooting [it's not film now remember, so I think you need to set in in mutliple shot mode now :-)]. The rest of us need to take more because we cannot visualise the image clearly (or at all in my case).
It's also no doubt what you shoot - I know when I go out with the kids, I burn through more than I do when taking a building or something.
I probably have around 20% that are bad enough to scratch right away. A big chunk of the rest of ok but not good. I am happy to get a couple out of each shoot that I like. |

I think the technical term for that is cinematography, Gordon!
I'll shoot anywhere from 1 or 2 to a hundred or so, depending on how much material there is. I do try to spend the time to set up what I want out of the shot first though, it's much more satisfying to completely miss it when you put time into it.
About half of what I shoot is "OK", IMHO, and a single digit percentage of that I will actually really work on.
I was always told that the best way to be thought of as a good photographer is to be very selective of what you show other people.

That's pretty much exactly right. I feel like I am taking a LOT of pictures if I do 40 in a day. I come from a large-format background, where I'd actually go on a 2-week photographic road trip and come home with maybe 30 exposed scenes, 3 sheets of film per scene, total 90 films for 2 WEEKS...
Just call me "The Frugal Photographer"!
