Yip... thats pretty much the same effect i get with my kit lens.

It's not broken lol!

As Ive said before in some other thread, I get about 10% of a 100 shots very sharp with the kit lens - if that, so start saving :)

Also, some ppl dont have any problems with theirs so...

I would say that its your lens, its not broken or anything thats just how it is,
what aperature are you using, maybe you have a focus poing to far out, try focusing middle or middle half.

The conditions in wich most of these pics where taken are not the best to get realy great photographs.
I dont realy see a focus point, and it would help to know what you where trying to focus on and what settings that you used.

The kit lens is not a great lens, but in the hands of a capable photographer it can be great, just take a look here.

You got it wrong:

THis is the kit lens generally shipped with the Rebel Xt?

Rebel Xt Kit Lens

It looks like the one I got with...

*Edit* Man, I had mine set all wrong, now I have to change my entries to that particular lens.

Check the diopter correction. I have a 20D and my 18-55mm lens is fuzzy when I change from my tamron to the canon. If the camera has a diopter correction, the little round thing next to the viewfinder, then turn it a few times to zero it in. I don't know if that is the problem with yours, but I had this problem the other day.

Hang on, does the diopter change the autofocus?

or would that only be an issue if manual focussing and the diopter was set badly?

No no no.

The diopter adjustment has NOTHING to do with how your final image is.

The shots look ok for the type of scene you are shooting, maybe a bit grainy and soft, but nothing that a little bit of USM and noise reduction can't improve. What ISO and Aperture were you shooting at?

It's probably the way you focus on those scenes plus your aperture. Have you shot anything with a near subject like a person and focus'd on them? How does it look in comparison?
