I am going on a rafting trip this summer and of course would like to take pictures from the boat. My Dimage A200 does not have a waterproof housing available and I have used a disposable (film) camera with disapointing results when they convert them to a CD for me. The Pentax Optio is only rated to about one meter (six feet) water resistant and gets mixed reviews. Ricoh has a new one that looks nice, the G500, but that is also water resistant to about the same depth (but much nicer features than the Pentax). Would either of these give me enough protection from the water (you can get hit pretty good sometimes from waves)? Other options I have found so far would be the Sea and Sea DX750G, a truely waterproof camera down to about 50 ft I think they said or the SeaLife DC500. The Sea and Sea seems to be the better of these two, but I haven't really found any reviews. Any suggestions? Thank you for any ideas!

If your camera ever gets deeper than six feet on a rafting trip, it is unlikely you'll recover it anyway -- hopefully, you won't still be attached to the wrist-strap!

I think what you need mostly is splash-protection, which the Pentax (which I've read a bit about) and the Ricoh you mentioned should provide. Olympus also has some "all-weather" models in their Stylus series which might work.

Do you really want to buy a new camera or just a waterproof bag that you can use with the one you have? Maybe check out this site or if all you really need is something to keep your existing camera dry.this site

added another site that also has SLR specific bags

The Olympus E-1 is a splashproof Pro DSLR if you want to go that way. I bought one recently on Ebay new from Cametta for less the 450. If your wanting to get a slr and also have splashproof, I'd look into that. If you want to stick with P&S, then I'm not sure as I've never had one that was splashproof.

It sounds like a good camping/ hiking/ backpack type of camera. Curious to see how good the pictures are. It is much updated since the previous version which was in 2004. Thanks for all the responces! Now I have more research to do. But lots of time. I don't go until the end of July. I would like some time to familiarize myself with the camera before I go.

THERE ARE A RANGE OF PRODUCTS FROM A COMPANY CALLED "AQUA PAC"
I HAVE A UNIVERSAL DIGITAL CAMERA POUCH.WORKS WELL (A BIT TRICKY TO USE OPTICAL ZOOM,AND HARD TO SEE LCD SCREEN ON THE CAMERA THROUGH THE PLASTIC POUCH BUT GREAT FOR CHEAP UNDERWATER PHOTOGRPHY)

I recently purchased the Fantasea FD70 for my D70. I've used it four times now and it works very well, especially since it was the lowest priced housing on the market. $850.00 including one year of insurance on the camera.

Personally I spend as much time upside down in my yak as I do getting flushed out of holes. Splash may work but if you take a swim it will get submerged for an extended period of time. I have friends that use the pentax and love it. I use the Sony u-60 which is older but still a good camera. Also you may look into buying a water proof housing for another digital PS there are many good ones out there..
