well i designed my site again, its completely barebones, with each redesign i take more away...but this is to my liking...how does it speak to viewers though?
let me know what you guys think //www.phphoto.net
this isnt really representative of a lot of the photography I do (i do photojournalism stuff more often) but I have a sportsshooter site for that.
still open to changes etc to be made...and I keep givin the page a title but it shows up at untitled document in the browser...anyone know how to fix that? I am no web designer.
One last disclaimer...I've always been a fan of small images, I hate scrolling around, and the images are big enough to see what the photo is about, so, yea that's why they are small. |

What are the number links supposed to do?
EDIT: I get it now. Not entirely intuitive how your navigation works.

I'm assuming you're going for the minimalistic approach, but it just seems too plain to me, like it's just there waiting for you to put stuff on it.
I find the navigation difficult, it took me a minute to figure out that the dots were what I was supposed to click.
You do have some night shots in there though. : )

im working on bringin a new image in the center for each number you click on..and making the dots bigger.
I do have some night shots...however they're all on film and I'm not a member =) |

It didn't work for me. When I clicked on a number to see another picture nothing happened. I defintely think you could stand to spice it up some and have far more than 6 pictures. |

You may also want to title the website something other than "Untitled Document". Just a suggestion. ;-)
A minimalist approach is good, but as others have stated, this is too plain and not very intuitive. People need to know what they are looking at and clicking on. They are not going to click, just to click.

you have to change the title on the index.htm page. |

ok things fixed, the dots for navigation should be more visible...
//www.phphoto.net check it now and let me know what you think.
I have it so minimal because I really don't want anything else on the site except my photos and contact info. If you can think of anything else that should be on the site let me know.
I'm not trying to sell services, I'm not trying to sell prints...it's like a web portfolio showing a sampling of what I do. |

I like the minimalism BUT I agree that navigation is just counter-intuitive.
Whilst I appreciate you're not trying to sell services or prints, you presumably are trying to share your work with interested parties and my feeling is that if they can't quickly work out how what the site contains and how to get around they'll close the window and move on...

you info page could stand to be a much larger font size and you want to say 'likes' not like to go... :0) |

I like the minimalist approach. Actually I think this layout is very neat and clean and disagree that it needs anything else. Just my personal opinion, I am not a web-designer or anything, but I do online art marketing and look at a ton of websites of artist of all medium and minimalism like this is very popular right now, and I think it works especially well for photography. I like the +/- not sure if those were there when others were viewing. Personally I wish I had done something like this, I am having a ton of problems writing my own website (trying to learn HTML).

ps..Have I seen that skateboarding photo in an ad? Maybe in "juxtapoz" mag? In fact I think I tore it out for my "photography scrapbook" for inspiration (or at least one similar). Very cool. |

I second what Kavey said.
It took me a while to figure out that you've got more than 6 images on the site. The gallery titles on the bottom of the page don't really stand out.
The font on the 'info' page looks really small. Here's a screenshot of what that info screen looks like to me on Firefox;

I liked small font, but if people had trouble reading that's a problem. Thanks for pointing it out.
ok, info is changed (bigger font) and the words at the bottom I made bigger to make the navigation more obvious.
has this helped or does navigation still seem confusing? |

I'd have to agree that the dots and the bottom are not really intuitive as links.

The problem isn't the small fonts. It's the frames. People can always change the size of the font in their browser. However, since you've locked the frames if they increase the size of the font they eventually push the links out of the viewable area of the frame and cannot click the link.
I believe most people would not instantly realize that the dots indicated additional photos. I think most would realize instantly the numbers indicated additional photos and not different galleries. The plus and minus, at least to me, would normally indicate the size of the image not forward and back to different images. That can be figured out quite quickly though.
Now perhaps if the dots represented the photos in a different way. For example if a dot changed shape or color to indicate what photo you were viewing that may help. |

the overall concept is good, but it is confusing. You have to remember we are all there to really critique it but the everyday consumer, if they have problems figuring it out, isnt going to bother with it. The average time that someone visits a webpage is approximately 10 seconds. So you gotta grab em fast. Those buttons arent gonna grab em fast unfortunately.
Your images look great, you picked some great shots for your portfolio!
Anyway, what program are you using to design your site? If dreamweaver, there is a blank white text box on the top of the design page, just type the page name into that and send it through your ftp. good to go! Good luck! |
