My personal preference for photographing my two boys is my 50mm f1.8 or 85mm f1.8 either at f2or at f2.2.
Both lenses are sharp wide open and only get better as they are stopped down. Especially with the 85mm, the DOF is sooooo shallow wide open that unless the subject is dead on square with the camera, it's easy to have one eye sharp and the other going soft.

50 1.4. perhaps the 50 1.8
Shallow DOF, sharp.
the first was a grab shot my wife took. the second a challenge entry - and it took some work to get teh point of focus where i wanted it. with practice it'd be repeatable more quickly.
a 70-200 2.8, perhaps the new version of the Sigma 70-200 2.8 that can focus close, like a foot or something. My tamron 70-210 can only do 5 feet, yes, close focus is some 60 inches. BUT it does what you want - this was shot thru a glass window at the zoo
canon's 85 1.2 would be wonderful on your camera, but it's not an economy lens LOL. the 1.8 might work better budget wise.

I think a 50 1.8 or 85 1.8 would be more than capable...
But she's obviously great at what she does...she catches a moment that's unique...I usually don't like photos of kids and stuff, or music, but that site is very well put-together.

Sobbed like a baby empathizing with those parents.
My son was in the NICU with a minor complication for a few days after being born and that was hard enough even knowing that he'd most likely be just fine.
I can't imagine what these parents have gone through.
My heart just goes out to them. |

Hey, that was my wedding song......
Shoot with a 50mm. :)
Manual focus on the eyes (dont rely on autofocus), use a soft glow layer or a filter in PS then reduce the opacity a LOT - mask the layer and unmask the eyes and gently soften the details of the smile and the rest of the face features. When shooting, use a very basic background, clean lines, simple clothes. Dont worry about smiles. And if its kids SHOOT BEFORE 10AM!!!
Um, thats the basic how to. I can probably whip up an action for you if you really need it - but not till the beginning of next week. :) I'm going to be updating my portfolio and website this weekend - I have a LOT like this recently. Very current and trendy. :)

Same here. My wife just walked in and saw me wiping tears from my eyes. I couldn't show her the pics as she is due to give birth to my son any day now so I told her my allergies were acting up. She made it halfway down the hall before she realized that I don't have allergies. She left it at that.
So sad.

Some, like the group shots look like a 50mm, but the close ups definitely look like a pro zoom probably a 70-200mm or the like. The 50mm may have a shallow depth of field but it is just too wide for close up photography. A 50mm close up will exaggerate certain features like the nose etc and make them appear larger than they actually are. A zoom with a wide aperture makes for more attractive portraits.

I wonder if she's paid the ASCAP fee for using the music on her site? I bet not. I see too many hypocrits out there - BIG copyright notice on the front page of her website too. I say this because it's VERY rare to find a website using any non-royalty free music.

I was wondering that as well. I've heard conflicting reports about his company's (or whoever you contact for that sort of thing) willingness to give rights. Some have said that it's extremely difficult and others said that they wrote back and said they have no issue with it. Just yesterday I was reading a rather interesting thread on another photography site that was full of justifications for why it's okay to use copyrighted music but not their copyrighted photos. |

I'm sure a lot of the differences have to do with the usage of the song. I'm working on a promo video for my dad's new sporting clay range and was quoted a price much lower than usual to use a song (they probably figured only 10 people would ever see this video). That's the great thing about owning rights, you can give them out as you wish.
With that said, do you think it's necessary to have permission for a song to play a slideshow for client viewings? Could yuo play a blank slideshow and just happen to play a CD with the music you like separately, or is this still considered commercial use and/or pubic display.
Boy, this thread is filled with lots of deusies! |

What I have been told (by nobody who should really know anything about this BTW) is that you should get the music from your clients and that way you aren't responisble- they bought/owned the CD so it is theirs to use. If you want one to show off you could use old classical where the rights are now public...

I've heard that as well but I'm skeptical. But it doesn't really matter for me because I'm not selling anything anyway. :)
MusicBakery.com has royalty free music. |

Ok, here are my big secrets...
All Natural lighting. I have a 29 foot wall with 25 feet of window that go floor to ceiling up to 14 feet. The window faces South and over looks a lake. My outdoor studio is on the other side of my house, facing North. I am on a hill so it Glows back there. The lighting is amazing!
As for the music on my site. Soon there will be a new children's CD coming out, you might want to see who gets credit for the images used on it.
I was going to list my equipment but then I thought about the "HYPOCRITE" comment and I figured, why should I help someone who is going to insult me and my integrity. I am a very giving and honest person. If my work doesn't show that than I don't know what to tell you.
To the starter of this thread, if you would like some help, just email me. erin@footprintsphotography.com I will help you in anyway I can.
Have a great day,
Erin Drallos
