No reason to get your panties in a bunch. Up your dosage if you must. Nothing I've written contradicts so I'm not sure why you're asking if I'm arguing with myself. Actually, not sure why you believe I'm arguing at all but it's irrelevant. What I've read people reporting, aside from a small handful of what could be sensor misalignment, appears to be standard natural, optical, and mechanical vignetting. Can this be accentuated by the sensor, sure. Is it a sensor issue, no. Does it have more to do with the lens, yes.

well it mostly is a lens issue, but there is definately a difference between the way film and an electronic sensor pick up light. The electronic sensor seems to be a little worse than film in the corners. At least... that's what I read on a (very) pro Nikon site.

Ok here's a twist. Looks like Sigma may be moving more towards the DC models that are spacifically for the small sensor digitals. The biggest camera store here in town looked up the Sigma 12-24 EX DG and said it was discontinued by Sigma. Anyone else heard of this? Can't see anything about it on the Sigma page. This lens has been out several years so it may be getting an upgrade, hopefully not to the DC versions only.

Sigma 12-24 for Canon mount is "In Stock" at B&H for $689.

Yup I see they ae still in stock, a couple places much lower than B&H. Just wondering if anyone else had heard of a replacement lens or updated one from Sigma that will work for small & large sensors or if the "discontinued" is not true.

The 16-35 f2.8 L is the widest I can find. Trying to find out how much better that is than the 17-40 f4 L lens. If anyone can help there is would be great.

Based on the review at Luminous Landscape the 16-35 is better at the long end and the 17-40 is better at the wide end.

The big difference is that the 16-35 is f/2.8, hence the price difference.

Should long end performance be a factor when selecting a zoom lens in this focal lenght range?

I think that would be personal preference. Though if looking in this range you're probably looking at the lenses for the wide end.

The main decision here would be 'do you need f/2.8'. If not then save some money and get the 17-40.

the 17-40 is a terrific lens on a 5d body

The Sigma 12-24 is a full frame (24mm x 36mm) lens.

The field of view is a LOT wider than a 16mm lens.

Sometimes Simga changes a lens, adds DG or Macro or APO or some other nomenclature, and then the older one gets discontinued. Perpaps the guy in the camera store didn't look for exactly the right letters after the 12-24mm part.

Here's a comparison. Even though its on a 1.6 crop camera, it should be a similar ratio on a FF.

And if you're the type who'd rather see numbers, here's an angle of view chart
