So...looking to upgrade lenses (holding off on the new camera) and was looking at the wide angles. I was wondering what peoples opinions on the following:
canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (the one I want, but not sure I really need...)
canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM (the one I'm strongly considering.)
tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF)
tamron AF 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di LD Aspherical IF
Can anyone help?? I had a Sigma lens for awhile, but then the auto-focus drive failed, so I'm a little leary on the 3rd party lenses. |

Compared to the 18-55 you've already got, none of them are really "wide." The Canon 17-40L is certainly a great lens but if you're wanting to get wider, you probably want to look at the Canon 10-22 or something similar. |

Of these three the 24-70 is the one I could never live withouth, it´s a do it all lens and if I had to pick just one of my lenses and had to get rid of the rest, this would be the one I would keep.
However, that lens isn´t really what people call wide except on full frame cameras and it´s by FAR the most expensive of the ones you listed. I have heard good things about the tamron 28-75 but have no experience. If you want wide though, get the 17-40 canon, it´s a good buy for what you get for your money, I had one and it worked great for me. |

Then I'd say the Canon 17-40L is the way to go. The Tamron you have listed also gets pretty good reviews (17-35 2.8).

Get the 17-40L. It won´t let you down. Besides; until december (I think) 2006 you get CashBack (100 Euros). |

I moved from the 17-85mm IS f/4-5.6 to the 16-35mm f/2.8 L. I do sometimes miss the range, and may have to add the 24-70mm f2.8L to my bag at some point, but the clarity edge to edge at wideangle is a great improvement and more than makes up for everything else. I understand that the 17-40mm is equally clear (though obviously a couple of stops slower).

So pretty much I've got it down to the two canons. Just found another lens, and wanted to pose the question out to everyone...is anyone familiar with the canon 24-105mm? Would that be something I might consider? |

Hi,
Ive just got hold of my 350D (inc. 18-55 Kit lens). Im after a superwide lens. What I need to know is which one would fit my 350D and a 5D when I upgrade my body in the future??
I was looking at the Tokina 12-24, but would this fit a 5D too? But if a Canon 10-22 fits both then I'd go for that.
Anyone got any tips.
Thanks

Yeah, the Canon 10-22mm will fit both, not sure about the Tokina? |

Isn't the Cannon 10-22 an EF-S lens, meaning it won't fit a full-frame camera like the 5D? |

yes - or I would have bought it.
The Tokina is compatible with full frame but the Canon 10-22mm EF-S lens is only compatible with APS-C sensors (300D, 350D, 20D, 30D).

Although the Tokina is an EF mount, I believe that the image circle is reduced, so will not work terribly well on a full-frame. The Sigma 12-24 is fully compatible with full frame cameras.

If you are shopping for one all-around lens for the time being, then I think you should strongly consider the Canon 24-105. The normal to medium telephoto focal range is ideal in my opinion, and it is very sharp from end to end. If on the other hand you want something a bit wider, then the 17-40 is excellent. I consider it to be a bit more specialized than the first one, however. My third pick would be the 24-70 f2.8. Not there is anything wrong with this one - far from it! This was the first lens I bought when I got back into digital photography, but I sold it when I got into a financial pinch and having owned it I know that the faster glass doesn't justify the extra cost, at least for my purposes.
You won't go wrong with any of these of course. Remember the old Carly Simon ketchup song??? "an-ticipation!!" heh heh Have fun! |

Back to Harmsusmc original question, if your choices are still the 4 in the original post don't count out the Tammy 17-35mm.
Near the same quality of the Canon at half the cost was an easy decision for me. The Tammy with some highend CP and ND filters rocks. |
