Digital is the truth... lol

Digital art, fine art photography or whatever you want to call it is going through that stage also. People fear what they do not know. :P

If I might paraphrase... People Fear Art. ;-)

Film is a 4 letter word. Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?

I keep my old rolls of film next to my toilet.

Can you get 12 stops of latitude from your slide film?? RAW baby, RAW.

I'm sorry, you started talking, but all I heard was this buzzing noise and your lips kept moving.

I have shot roughly 17,000 shots in 2 years. 17,000 worth of shots on film would have cost $2833.

My 20d was $1150 and my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS was $1700.

Damn, you suck.

I think digital has made everyone and there mom into a photographer. The majority of people in this forum would not be taking pictures if it was film. Now all you have to do is push a few buttons in photoshop and you are done. Most people would not sit in the darkroom for hours and hours processing pictures.

If a photographer means somebody taking photographs, then I've been one since toddlerhood. I dont do darkrooms, I usually just send the rolls of films to be developed.

Film cameras - isn't that what trolls use to take pictures?

How about, âMy grandfather once had a camera like yours. It was a great piece of equipment for itâs time. Do they still make film for it?â

Or perhaps, âIâve heard that you can make good money selling antiques like that on eBay.â

More smart-ass than educated I know, but what the hellâ¦

I shot quite a bit of film with Canon 35mm bodies back in the 70âs and 80âs. Now I shoot with digital. I wish it could have been the other way around because digital makes learning photography much faster, easier, and cheaper. I could have saved a small fortune on film and processing costs. Processing and post-shot editing were easier to learn with film though, simply because there was a lot less that you could do back then. Learning everything you can do with Photoshop might take a lifetime⦠or longer.

And we thank you Tomfoolery... I don't think I'd be outside the boundaries of reason to say that this is hands down the single best photograph on DPC... EVER!!! Possibly in the entire history of photography itself!

Actually, that's a bit over the top, but it's a kickin' awesome pic!

Ask them why they are using film at all? If they think that's cheating, why don't they grab a brush and paint and start using canvas? A 100 years ago the reaction to normal film was identical to this reaction to digital. You can't stop progress.

I see no difference in adjusting the settings of the camera before or after pressing the release button.

I used to do it just for the nice little buzz I got in my poorly ventilated darkroom. Ahh... I can still see that pretty red glow. :-)

The simple fact is that digital has replaced film as the primary medium for creating photographic images.

I know many professional photographers, and have even worked in the publishing industry where I have dealt with a few print photographers.
They all shoot digital. No magazine or newspaper these days would have it any other way. The costs of film and processing are just too high for a viable business.

I'm not saying film is dead. There will always be people shooting on film. For the same reason people still practice archery as a sport. A bow and arrow is not the most effective way to shoot something in the age of guns, but the activity of archery has it's own peculiarities that make it enjoyable, and will make people want to hone their skill in it. Some people just enjoy being in a darkroom and processing film. They get the same satisfaction from hand dodging and burning a print as a lot of others get from learning how to use PS layer masks...

So the simple answer is that digital is the most effective way to shoot, distribute and reproduce photographic images nowadays. But you can get tremendous pictures using either digital or film. So there really shouldn't be any argument. They're both just tools.

And on a lighter note... can you imagine the 'website' "fpchallenge" (the "f" is for film). FPC entries are posted in from all over the country, and then someone pins them to a really big noticeboard somewhere... (probably where Drew and Langdon live). Members trek there over the coming months (the voting period would have to be about 6 months for everyone to have a fair shot at voting), and write their score on a little card on the notice board.
The winners are notified by post again - they even get sent an actual blue ribbon to stick up in their darkroom...

ROFL. Dude, you can get drive motors for cheap that will put a 300 dollar film body up to 14FPS without much trouble and expense... I've seen a couple kicking around here...

Much less expensive than my 30D...

Of course you can't review in the field..... :)

I like the idea of FPChallenge... The one thing about it is that instead of having a challenge every week, you would end up with a challenge every 3 months... :)

OK, I went out and bought a roll of ISO200 fuji film. How do I get this thing to work on my camera? ROTFLMAO
