Plenty of Communists like musicals and Rock & Roll. I suspect the only thing they don't like are greedy record companies and the profligate over-consumerism and ostentatious lifestyle adopted by its mega-stars ...

And I think it was the anarchist Emma Goldman who said "I'm not joining any revolution where I can't dance."

I just bought a copy of The King and I ... I think I prefer old musicals though ... the newer ones seem too overdone.

Some others I like are The Music Man, Showboat, and West Side Story. Hey, four different composers -- pretty good!

You're killing me...you know that???? ;)

When I was still in the classroom, my theatre classes had a 6-week unit over Cats. I still sing some of those songs in my sleep. :)

I'm such a stud.
In addition to these, yes, Dirty Dancing is yet another of my favs, and I even love
"10 things I hate about you" and "She's all that" and yes, "Beaches". (not that they are musicals)
Some feminine side I got huh? LOL

If I had my way, I would have cut short the entire casts village. ;-P

the best part about the original theatrical release of grease was that it included a 20 minute documentary about the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. i'll never forget the interview with the classically trained piano player, billy powell. he was playing the piano on his back porch, showing how he took all of his piano solos from beethoven and bach. simply incredible.

Haha Laurie. While Memory is a song that sticks in my head every now and then, I would rather sit through a root canal as to see that musical again. We caught it at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta and I still thank God they had an ample supply of champagne.

Jellicles do and Jellicles can, Jellicles can and Jellicles do, Jellicles do and Jellicles can, Jellicles can and Jellicles do

I just wanted to cry! :D

I definitely appreciate the huge effort it takes to pull off a production like that but that's about as far as it goes. I guess there's just way too much overacting (especially the facial expressions) for me to enjoy a lot of musicals.

LOL. For the record, I've watched both Greases more times than should be allowed. I like Grease because it's a good musical/movie (though I'm not too keen on the moral of the story: get a perm, wear tight leather pants and start smoking and you get the guy... I like Grease II purely for the cheese factor. I think it's some of the worst acting of our time. :)

Oh, and I was Marty in our HS production. Best time of my life.

Just to add a scholarly (?) note here, "Grease" is an update of "West Side Story", and both of THOSE are remakes of "Romeo and Juliet", which of course is the seminal star-crossed-lovers story in English literature. The continuing popularity of these movies, once you get under their faddish surfaces, speaks to the enduring, mythopoetic nature of the story itself.

Aren't y'all glad a weighed in? Back to your regular programming now :-)

That's some interesting info Robert....... Waits for John Travolta to drink poison :D

On a more morbid note - guess what the missus informed me is going to be on the Family Channel tonight? That's right - Dirty Dancing.

Main Entry: ox·y·mo·ron
Pronunciation: "äk-sE-'mor-"än
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural ox·y·mo·ra /-'mor-&/
Definition: Dirty Dancing - Family Channel

On the plus side, most women feel horny after watching that movie. ;P

I actually only just saw Dirty Dancing for the first time about a month ago...I forgot how Patrick looked back then (gosh, him in Ghost...shiver me timbers) but the movie itself...eh. Im not a romantic so...ehhh.

BTW..Ive yet to see Grease and Im not itching to either. I saw a biography on Sid recently just cause it came on and I was too lazy to find the remote to change the channel (hehe) and while I found it interesting, I still wasnt eager to see the movie. One of these days...I will watch it though, just so I can avoid the looks of horror when I say I havnt seen it..hehe
