Did anyone gets photos of the space shuttle launch today? That would make a nice fireworks entry.

Darn! Since I did get an entry in I liked the 24 hours... would keep down the competition ;) |

what a bummer I filmed my fireworks on the 3rd. Lucky for me there are more tonight only 10 miles away. Bonus they are on a lake. Here are the shots i took last night. //www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio.php?USER_ID=50578&collection_id=15802 Didnt get the spot I wanted to shoot from do to it being crowded so maybe it is a bonus that i can't use any of these shots for the challenge. anyway any advice on how i can improve tonights shoot would be appreciated., thanks in advance and Happy Independence Day to ya-all!

This sounds like it could be frustrating. Spent $127 on a variety box of fireworks last night before I knew about the challenge. Just not quite sure how to photograph them well. Any tips? |

Dangit! I was so excited to go out shoot some serious fireworks because my wife is out of town, but when I went to search for my gear, it wasn't to be found! We are moving soon, I think it got packed already. The items I need: Tripod, remote trigger. I think I may be able to do without the remote trigger. I'll just have to hold something dark over the lens until after I release the trigger. The tripod though...HELP!!! |

Our fireworks were Saturday in Hartford, (major big show) and last night locally. I got some wonderful shots of the ones last night, I think, because it is the first time I have even tried to photograph fireworks. I have camcorded them, and the tapes came out awesome, but still photography for fireworks is one more new thing I never tried until last night.
Techniques included shutter priority, exposure compensation at -2 steps, and continuous focus. Occasional burst mode was used too. The family fireworks we had Saturday were done with a neutral density filter to allow me longer exposures without glare.
My shutter was open anywhere from 1/2 sec to 10 secs, just to get a good feel for what settings would give me the best shots (for future reference, of course.) I think about 1 to 3 seconds gave me the best shots. |

there has to be someone out there w/ an HDTV that can take pics of the television, and then advance edit (noise ninja)
how funny would that be for a ribbon?
(i personally think this would be a great 48hr challenge, but the people that are in charge of putting these challenges together have never failed us, so why start my bitching now ;) ) |

These were my first ever attempt at fireworks. (July 3rd)
They were shot from about 1/2 mile away, so not so great....
But, now I get to try again tonight!!! (and a whole lot closer) Can't wait!
Good luck to everyone!!

Very nice for your first attempts. Hope you get some tonight, and that it won't get rained out. Don't know if it will help, but I have a feeling that the ones in the top will have some land perspective in their shots. Check out the one from moniepenny. It is in the sky gallery. She took it with a cityscape below it, giving the fireworks a nice perspective.

Here are a few of my eye candy in the sky pics. Since they were taken July 3, I can't enter the challenge, though I would have put myself back into camera status if they were dated the 4th, then entered the challenge. I thought, considering I have never shot fireworks as stills before, that they came out really good.
the images after the challenge begins, so that I won't be accused of posting outtakes.

something that you can try
iso100, f16, 5s exposure
to focus, try to focus at any object ( building maybe) at similar distance to where the fireworks are and f16 will get things in focus for you...
