We're all entitled to a rant every now and then. And I'd take one of your "disappointing" scores any day.

I wonder what your therapist will say when you tell him, "I can't believe my score. It's at 6.9588 and I really thought It'd be at least 7.1. I need another one of those virtual ribbons." :)

My second highest score ever (well unless it tanks, still lots of room to tank). Almost didn't enter it because I didn't think it was "on the beach" enough and obviously I still can't tell what the voters want.

9 votes this morning and I'm down by 0.2 already. Last 3 votes were 3, 4, 4. I'm trying real hard not to use that dreaded "T" word!

That statistic will change once the challenge is finished :)

Is it just me; or do other people have the problem of thinking they entered a good pic & the scores seem to turn out not so great?

EDIT: nevermind; i see others are having the same problem, glad to see im not the only one =)

I appreciate your point and certainly don't debate it. I'm just no longer sure that the format of these challenges is really providing any beneficial feedback like I'd initially anticipated or if it's just becoming a waste of time.
"this is by the beach how?" is hardly a helpful critique. I think it's pretty obvious I knew I wasn't submitting an archetypal beach scene. I'd like to improve my photography and my own vision, not just be assimilated and homogenized to the point where my photos could have been taken by almost anyone on the site with an equivalent amount of skill. [/quote]

For me some of the advantage of the challenges is to see how my own unique/artistic view of the world matches what other people see or expect. For me photography is a hobby, but if I was looking to become a professional free advice on how well I understood what I was being asked would be priceless. I try to think when entering "the magazine is called (insert challenge name here) would they put my picture on the front cover, or on page 26?" The other way I look at things is "the store is called (insert challenge name here) and they sell (insert larger more detailed discription of the challange) would they be interested in selling my print?"

There is no harm in entering a really good picture in a challenge it doesn't fit. Your average score goes down a bit, but that doesn't really matter does it? I have a picture that scored 4.913 and was still someone's favorite.

Oh, heck, people; I got a shot that is dramatic as all get-out, it's recognizably an ocean beach without any confusion at all, and it's scoring 3.4!

Not that I expected much from it, but... jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢

How is that not a helpful critique? I think it's quite valid, given that the challenges have themes. It's not just about the technical side of photography here, or every challenge would be a free study. Part of the point is to put together a composition which reflects the challenge theme. If the photo doesn't get the theme across, then that is something the photographer absolutely should be told so that they doesn't sit there scratching their head wondering why their entry is tanking. Well, you failed to get the theme across, and there you go. That is definitely a helpful comment.

Unfortunately, if you don't meet the challenge, the voters have little to no incentive to look at the photo any further, as most challenges these days have well over 200 entries each.

I guess you can't see the beach in my pic, 'cause i'm laying on it.and the view is what i see while "i'm on the beach". love the shot and the place still. 66 votes, 4.055.

Can't help you a whole lot with that. It's the 'initially anticipated' that leaves me high and dry. The place gives what it gives. I find it beneficial - if it's stressful then that's something to look out for. It's almost certainly a waste of time to some degree, but it's what I choose to waste a piece of my time on.

It's not a helpful critique, it's a brief indication of how somebody reacted to the picture in the context of the challenge. Maybe that is helpful. Comments are few and far between, no one has much time to do more than vote. Every now and then someone flutters down out of the clouds and shows that they have actually understood what you picture was about. Like satori, it's rare and it doesn't last, but boy is it worth it.

These people couldn't homogenise a cup of tea and two spoonfuls of sugar, especially not in your cup in your kitchen while they're sitting in front of their computers.

Chill.

This leaves me puzzled brother Bear. How could you, of all people, manage to score a 3.4 on a challenge you are most comfortable with? Yikes. Heads up. It seems folks are just going through voting fatigue this early in the voting process. With over 700+ entries in both Open Challenges, it's a "bear" sometimes to vote.
