It really is frustrating to deal with such shallow definitions, best of luck to you, Ben! |
Actually Ansel Adam's work and most photography books are located in the section labeled photography. But I do agree Art is art its not defined by which media is used or how it was applied. So in my book there is photography that is art... |

I think that anyone who says that photography can't be art has never taken a photograph above a snapshot level. Someone who has taken a great photograph, and thus knows all the difficulties required in taking it, will recognise it as art. A snapshot is just capturing whatever the hell is in front of the photograph. The art in photography is going beyond that. |

My opinion on this seems to change like a mood.
I usually think of photography more as a craft.
Much like a blacksmith etc.
As one becomes more gifted in executing their craft their artistic abilities and expression come to light.
Is prose art?
Photography captures a moment or feeling.
Similar to writing.
"Art" is very broadly defined, rightly so.
I have no problem with calling it art but I'd say 99% of this site wouldn't qualify IMHO.
It is rare when a photo enters the realm of true fine art.

First, let me say I know YOU don't feel this way, so this isn't aimed at you, it's simply taking the thought you presented that others DO have.
A paint artist doesn't create from nothing. They have an image in their mind and they use materials and tools to bring that vision to canvas, including "capturing a moment" when they have a model pose, or set up a still life to copy.
A photographic artist does EXACTLY the same, just using a different tool.

I believe the National Endowment for the Arts sponsored a guy who placed crucifixes in giant jars of urine, and took pictures of them back in the early 90's.
Maybe you should move to Washington and lay a steamer on the constitution, I'm sure it would be greeted with a great fanfare for your artistic talent.
meh... yeah, art is subjective. Some of it is pretty crappy though. ;)

my boyfriend once said that photography is definatly art, & he thinks it is harder to take a photo than it is to paint a picture. cuz you only have one opportunity to take that picture. & painting or anything else, you have your entire world of imagination to use, & you can work on it for months....... & make it JUST the perfect way you want it... photography, you cant. you have one moment & one chance to get that photo as best as you can.
Yeah thats why i love him =)
funny thing is, hes not a photography kind of guy, though he can take one hell of a photo. |

What got my attention was the size of your town. I live in a place where I have one address, a water bill from a different place and a phone number from a third town. "Hey man! Now you're really livin'!" (The Eels) Rural life... canna beat it.
Now off to see some of your small town shots.

I did. I've given many away to people here. They are part of my "sleeper cell" and will be activated remotely at a time of my choosing to do my bidding.
