Whoah. I just looked round the site, casually browsing other peoples' work. And it's excellent. Brilliant. Original. Thought provoking. And I am never ever going to take pictures as good as the one's I've seen! Did anyone else feel the same way when they started out?

Definately.... I only joined about a week ago, and I have spent alot of time looking at all the photos here, and the talent on this site totally amazes me, although I know I will never be able to truly compete with some of the best photographers on here, I am hoping to learn as much as I can from them, do the best I can with my photos, enjoy myself, and enjoy the beautiful photos that I am surrounded by here.

I'm not really one for technical details. I don't know what film speed or aperatures are or anything like that I just want to take good photographs. I really enjoy it as a hobby. I'm just really scared at my photos being placed among professional ones!Oh well...I can get better and listen to advice!I'm panicking and I only joined here two days ago.Oh well.

By the way, did anyone put in a submission photo for the challenge "Nostalgia"? I did. It was my first entry into a photography contest ever. I'm so proud!

I'm sure all of us had that on the first submission on our first photo. Just remember the rules of the challenge, ie: picture must be taken within the challenge date unless specified.

Good Luck and have Fun!

Sorry. Some people just don't learn. For example, I submitted this beauty for my second entry. A year later, I submitted this beauty.. :)

was not long ago when I came on board and what I remember was folks like Sonifo, Dsidwell (two of the folks here in this thread) that helped me find my footing from simple positive comments. I say this because though there may be times when you may say "oops" what have I done!!...and some folks may be quick to point out the oops. bottom line is the people that make this site a great place to be are going to make you feel like family and help you to find your footing. I know you can, like just about everyone that sticks around for awhile, be a better photographer and have alot of fun doing it.

Good Luck!

I've been submitting for about a month now and a member for about a year.

I spent the first year following the site on and off. I had no camera but I learned a lot from reading comments on other people's photos. I didn't leave many comments at first because I didn't have a camera and figured I didn't know what I was talking about.

After I entered my first shot, I loosened up a lot and have learned that commenting on photos is another excellent learning tool. You don't have to be "right" just say what you see. I love getting comments from people I don't agree with because it helps me see things differently and try new things.

I love to look at the history of some of the photographers on the site. In some cases they were just great out of the gate (like my personal favorite Tim Jenson -- timj351 ) But even he gets 4.X's from time to time.

But some others started more or less where I am and you can see them improve as you click through their history. Their first shots aren't much better than mine but you see them master their camera and techniques and develop their style. That gives me hope. :)

I think you have to just dive in and not worry too much about things and most of all have fun.

I've been here since January. I recognized a few as outstanding photographers. But the more I learned the more my opinions have changed. I have my favorite photographers, and I know I have a few who have me on there favorites list.

You do learn a lot here and as the saying goes "Practice Makes Perfect." You got a digital not a 35mm so go practice away!!!!! It won't cost you anything to snap away in the neighborhood.

There are a lot of excellent photographers on the site and they can be very helpful.

I had been away from photography for a long time and this site has definitely brought the excitement back. Just wait until you make that first submission and start clicking that "update stats" button to see how it's doing.... it can be distracting to say the least.

The first comment I received on my first submission was, " thought that porn was forbidden at DPC! LOL". I hadn't even seen that perspective and could have crawled under an Internet rock. Anyway, if I can keep trying after that start, I'm sure you'll do just fine.

After my first challenge, I thought absolutely as you do. It's one of my joys that I know feel like a competitive photographer on this site - I feel like I've really achieved something in this year - orat least in the last six months or so. For all its faults, god bless this community.

Yeahm what an achievement - to be that good a photographer, and finish last. And what's more, with a pretty good phtoograph too.
