I really want to do a photo essay on Kensington, the neighborhood I was born in, yet I am a little intimidated to be walking around that area with my expensive camera. Has anyone shot in this area, or maybe North Philly or South Philly and what experiences have you had. I shot one photo essay in 2004 with my room mate right around Temple's campus. However I still felt shielded by the campus and was only using a crappy point and shot. Now I want to take my XT out, but don't want to put myself in danger.

Not to be alarmist, but did you see the latest police shooting happened in Kensington? I wouldn't feel confortable with my gear by myself, to be honest.
