As many I disappointed with the drop of CF support, but heck I can get over that. But 1/200 flash sync? It̢۪s obvious that Nikon has dropped the electronic flash sync that is one of my favorite features of my D70. Not many cameras can sync throughout their entire shutter speed range (with a manual flash).
But I̢۪ll buy one as soon as it becomes available if for no other reason than MIRROR LOCK-UP, a decent viewfinder and iso 100. Maybe Nikon is listening after all.

Yes, 1/200s X-Sync is a bummer, but, on the bright side, the D80 *does* provide High-Speed Flash Sync mode, so you can use flash with up to the maximum shutter speed (at a reduced power, though). This is, likely, the same as with your camera.

Where did you see that it has the mirror lock-up feature? |

Gosh I've read so much, from so many sources about the D80 since last night I can't find the quote ( or maybe I'm just delusional since I can't find it now). But it was my understanding that it has FE2 FA type lock up in that the mirror is up at the start of the self-timer cycle, but now I'm getting worried cause I can't find the reference. |

I think that I found it: the custom setting menu item 31 looks like mirror lock up: //www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond80/page10.asp |

Yeah, it's not a 'while you wait' lock-up, it lifts the mirror prior to all the other activities in order to reduce vibration.
There seems to be a sort of upgrade strategy indicated, i.e. that if you have a Nikon dSLR already, get the D200, whereas if you're upgrading from coolpix the the D80 is a gateway to the Nikon dSLR system and you can keep the SD cards you already have.
When I grow up I'll get a D200 - while reading threads about the new D90 and D3X...
That's if I grow up that fast. |

Canon had better get their socks up for their own August announcment (if any). Looks like a very sweet camera at a very good price.

For Canadians, the suggested price is $1,249.00. Henrys has the body only for $1,250.00, and the lens kit, with the AF-S DX 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED, for $1,600.00. |

How quickly and how much will D70 prices drop? Any speculations?

Anyone know of anything on that front? I was planning on getting a 350D this fall...but now I don't know what to do, this one looks like a very appealing camera for $1300 with lens. |

Yea, I don't think the 80 will have mirror lockup, (from what I've just read) that's a D200 feature.

On the Nikon USA website you can print the technical specs of each camera and compare them (D200 vs. D80).
D200 advantages: Stronger Body, Auto White Balance and Flash control sensor 1005 pixel vs. 420 pixel: 5fps vs. 3fps: Shutter 1/8000 vs. 1/4000: Appears to be the same sensor in both RGB CCD 23.6 x 15.8mm:
Everything else pretty much the same |

No, the sensor is slightly different between the D200 and D80.
I wonder if it's the same sensor as in the A100. Here's a comparison of high ISO performance of D80 vs. that of Sony A100: //photo-cafe.jp/scoop/index.html |

It doesn't appear to be the same sensor because based on those comparisons the D80 handles noise at high iso much better than the A100. |

I thought I read (Somewhere I am still looking for the link) it was the same sensor as the A100. Oh well time will tell. |

Ah darn!
Just got an email from Adorama saying:
"We regret to inform you that the following item is
currently on backorder. Please accept our apology for this inconvenience."
How can they do this to me? lol |

Found it:
//www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond80/
"It features a ten megapixel DX format CCD (the same we presume as used by Sony in the DSLR-A100), the metering sensor from the D50 and numerous other items taken or modified from the D200."
So they are guessing too. But a good one I guess!

Umm.. The d70 has mirror lock up, why wouldn't the D80.
The lower flash sync and cheaper metering chip (420 pixel vs the d70's 1005pixel) suck though.
luminance and rgb histograms are a big plus. |

The D70 does not have mirror lock up. The mirror lock up in the menu is for cleaning only and not for image making. I wouldn't worry about the metering so much. My Nikon D90s had only seven segments (zones) in its matrix metering and it was quite accurate. I'm sure 420 will be plenty enough. I do agree with that Nikon should have kept the CCD shutter along with the regular shutter, but it is probaly incompatable with the new sensor. I'll keep my D70, so that I can have flash sync up to 1/8000sec. |

How do you mean? The D70 can sync up to 1/500s. The D80 can sync up to 1/200s in normal mode, but it also has the high-speed sync option, syncing up to the maximum shutter speed (1/4000) at the expense of reduced flash power. And with low ISO 100 the slower fastest shutter speed of 1/4000s is easy to forgive, since at ISO 100 it's equivallent to D70's 1/8000s at miniumum ISO 200. |
