LOL! :)
Originally posted by hyperfocal: I'll keep my D70, so that I can have flash sync up to 1/8000sec. |
How do you mean? The D70 can sync up to 1/500s. The D80 can sync up to 1/200s in normal mode, but it also has the high-speed sync option, syncing up to the maximum shutter speed (1/4000) at the expense of reduced flash power. And with low ISO 100 the slower fastest shutter speed of 1/4000s is easy to forgive, since at ISO 100 it's equivallent to D70's 1/8000s at miniumum ISO 200. |
Opps, wishful thing I guess I intended to type N90s.
But to answer your question I wouldn't be surprised that the D80 has the same focal plane shutter as the D70. What made the D70 special was that in addition to the FP shutter it has a CCD shutter. With this shutter flash sync can be obtained at any speed up to 1/8000sec. There are some limitations however. With a Nikon flash such as the SB-600 or SB-800 (also with my SB-80dx) when you turn the flash on the camera defaults to 1/500. This can be defeated by placing some electrical tape over the contacts of the flash except for the center contact pin. Of course you loose TTL, but if you need the speed its there. I use an older manual flash, the Vivitar 283 (I have one with less than 10v sync voltage) and/or studio strobes. One other limitation at 1/8000 or maybe even 1/4000 a flash set to full power might have duration longer than shutter speed depending on the flash. This of course would throw off any calculated or handheld flash metered settings. If you are using the histogram as your meter it won't affect anything except you might be using more juice (and longer recycle times) than necessary.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the D70's flash sync speed trick works just fine on the D80. I can't see Nikon ignoring the huge fan base that trick seems to have bought them and removing it on the pretense that it was some sort of error.
Use it with a proper Nikon flash with iTTL and it will sync up to the max stated sync speed (1/200).
Use it with a dumb flash, and you should still get the same functionality as the D70 of being able to sync up to max shutter speed (now down to 1/4000 according to Phil Askey's site).
I'm currently trying to explore if this is really as big of a deal as they say it is in a very quiet thread in the Q&A section.

I really doubt the D80 has it or it wouldn't sync a lowly 1/200. |

Nikon is finally sending out emails announcing this camera.
I jumped the gun yesterday and pre-ordered a D-80. Actually it was just a 10% down payment to guarantee they hold one for me when shipment comes in. The salesman said they have placed an order for 50 cameras But the Nikon Distributor has told them that the order will be broken down in to 2-3 shipments depending on imediate demand. I thought it would be best to make sure one is set aside for me. This is a pretty big store, and if they are getting notice that their orders wont be filled right away, You can bet the small neighborhood stores will be left in the dark. Quote from owner of our little local store, "Nikon likes the big fish better than the little fish" He does not expect to stock the D-80 til around Mid November just in time for the xmas shopping rush. Nikon has promised him one unit to stock as a demo. Which he said he is debating making his own.
So in short, If you are like me and want this camera yesterday, You better go put your name on one now. I have a feeling they are going to be in short supply for the first few months. Also if you are in a rush you may want to go to one of the bigger fish .

It doesn't appear to be the same sensor because based on those comparisons the D80 handles noise at high iso much better than the A100. |
it's the same sensor. this comparison has been discussed on DPReview. if you look at the EXIF's, the D80 and A100 exposed the scenes differently:
A100 f/4.5, 1/40 sec.
D80 f/3.5, 1/20 sec.
the A100 is underexposed by about a stop and a half compared to the D80 and so is a lot noisier. too bad the article authors didn't catch this and match up the exposures, it would have been a nice test. the conspiracy theorists would say they *did* notice, but decided not to say or do anything about it. ;)
though it does seem to confirm that the A100 tends to underexpose on dark scenes (as mentioned in the DPReview review) and the D80 nails it or is slightly overexposing at high ISO's to help with the noise (look at the bright oval lights).
it also looks like the D80 may be a bit cleaner than the D200 at high ISO's or they cranked up the NR a bit based on the detail smearing.

Do I sell my D70 or keep it as a backup? I like taking pictures but I'm not a camera fanatic like some people, who I won't mention (like you and you). |

I am giving my D-50 to my wife, however it will also serve as a back up to me. Or perhaps I will carry both around with me with different glass on each one so I can take close ups and telephoto shots without having to change glass a bunch of times.

This is just my Opinion here...... But they are comparing it here to the D50 alot..... Me i think the D50 is Crap it just dont feel right it feels cheaply made campared to the D70 or the D200..... i still think i would go for the D200 in this case. And the size compared to the D70 it looks smaller? i mean you dont want some HUGE camera to carry around. But i just like well built stuff and i have held the D50 in one hand and the D70 in the other and there is just no Comparison to me.... this is just me ranting =) |

I will still have the option to get the D-200, I am positive the store that I am dealing with wouldn't have any problem with me wanting to upgrade my purchase and give them an extra 800 dollars.
However I put money down to reserve a D-80 so if I do like it after I look at it and hold it, I am assured I wont have to wait. I will decide that day if my needs warrant another 800 dollars spent. I certainly will keep what you have said in mind while I am looking at the D-80.

I am first on the list. I called the store 2 days ago to see if some bulbs I ordered had come in. I asked how many orders they had. So far they have 9 people signed up for the D-80. I told them to keep a D-200 set aside for me also just incase I do not like the D-80 He said No Problem, even offered to sell me one right now for $1499.00 and would throw in a CF card. I am tempted...
Edit to put $ in front of #'s

I picked up a brochure in the camera shop today advertising "D80 Digital Live" events around Japan, starting 25th August in Tokyo. Apart from a few lectures, you can take along an SD card and shoot off some pics to take home and view the photo gallery. Entry is free, but I'm not going.... ;>þ
Oh, see, Bugzeye, it takes an SD card, not a CF card. |

I'm at the top of the list for the D80 with Adorama, but I almost bought a slightly used D2X yesterday for $2899. |

I just ordered 2 D80s from 2 different stores... I don't know why, but what the hell. I'm thinking I will be able to sell one of them at a higher price when it's gonna be back ordered everywhere. But that's illegal right?.. oh well.
And if I like it, I'm gonna sell my D70s too.
I just asked the guy for the damn 18-200 VR and it's still back ordered big time with alot of people on the list lol. I'm gonna have to pay a little more to get my hands on one.

To me it sounds like the law of supply and demand, not price gouging. |

I just got off the phone with the store. The bulbs I ordered arrived this morning. But they still have not received any word as to when they will receive the first shipment of the D-80's. What they do know is the battery packs are on backorder and are estimated to be at least a month behind the camera. However they have a large stock of the batteries so at least I will have spares when I pick up the camera. He is going to honor the D-200 for $1499 w/card offer if I decide to give the D-80 a miss. So either way I will be a happy camper hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
The list is also down to 7 now. Someone backed out and someone else couldn't wait and bought D-70s instead.

I'm so happy I ordered mine.
Now I can sell my D70s and be confident about the D80.

Tomorrow I am officially taking myself off the waiting list for the d-80. I am going to get a d-200 instead. I have been thinking about it and 200 dollars off with a free CF card is a nice bargain. I can not pass it up, Soon as the store opens tomorrow I am going shopping. I am mostly influenced by the user/owner reviews on various websites that and the photos taken with the camera that appear here on DPC.
I am sure I will not regret my choice.
Anyway now there will be one more D-80 available out there, which should move someone up on the waiting list. :-)
