The flash on my S1 will not pop up even when I put the camera in manual mode and force the flash "on". Automatic mode in a dark room does not make the flash pop up either. This is something recent as I've not had a problem with this camera in the two years I've owned it.
Canon tech support said to send it in for service and they gave me two options:
(1) Repair it for $89.00 plus shipping of $8.00
(2) Trade it in and upgrade to a refurbished Canon Powershot S2 IS for $199 plus shipping.
Noting the above, I have two questions;
(1) Is there anything I can try to fix my flash?
(2) Given the two above options, which would you choose?
Thanks,
Mike

upgrade, the S2 has a manual flip-up flash. this way it will never break :)

I've come to the same conclusion. I'm only talking $100.00 difference between repair and upgrading to an S2. I'll place the order tomorrow and be done with it.
Thanks

Agreed, upgrade to the S2.
I wasn't even intereste in the S1 due to a few things I didn't like... One of them was the lack of a focus assist lamp on the body. If you do a lot of lower light flash work, you might really appreciate this.
I really like the manual flip up.
The screen is nicer, the IS a higher level, the speed is significantly faster. I think you will really like it. |

There is a fix at this link, if you can remove a screw it may save you lots of cash. Give it a try......

I'm not so sure at this point that upgrading to an S2 IS for 100 bucks is all that bad of an idea... I wouldn't call it saving lots of cash. I think it's a seriously worthwhile upgrade.
There is a significant performance gain in the overall camera, several features, added focus assist lamp, manual flash pop-up, nicer screen, substantially better lens, MUCH better movie mode, faster picture reading/writing, slightly better noise performance, better white balance performance, I think better top shutter speed......
Not to mention a new camera which will likely come with a new warranty and better resale value... |

I have the same problem with mine. If I tap the top of the flash (after it should have popped up automatically) it pops up. Not ideal, but a satisfactory workaround compared to paying $100
